Austrian audio manufacturer Pro-Ject Audio Systems has introduced a duo of budget-friendly MC cartridges. While both cartridges are reasonably priced, their standout characteristic is the True Balanced Connection.
Pro-Ject Audio Pick it MC1 and Pick it MC2
Turntable cartridges typically comprise a blend of magnets and coils. In the case of MM cartridges, the magnets are the components that move (MM stands for Moving Magnet), whereas in MC cartridges, it is the coils that are in motion (MC stands for Moving Coil). MC systems are often regarded as more intricate to manufacture. This complexity arises because, in MC cartridges, the coil is directly attached to the stylus, unlike in MM cartridges. The benefit of this design is a reduced moving mass, leading to lower mass inertia and a more dynamic audio output. It is important to note that MC cartridges are not inherently superior to MM cartridges; each system has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, with dedicated enthusiasts for both.
Pro-Ject Audio aims to demonstrate that high-quality sound from an MC cartridge can be achieved at a relatively affordable price with their latest offerings. The new Pick it MC1 and Pick it MC2 models are positioned as entry-level options within the MC cartridge product line.
MC cartridge and True Balanced Connection
Austrian engineers recognized the benefits of symmetrical signal routing for turntables many years ago. Pro-Ject Audio asserts that only moving coil (MC) systems can truly harness the audio potential of the True Balanced Connection, commonly referred to as TBC.
