Rega Nd9: A Moving Magnet Cartridge Built Like a Reference Tool

Rega has never treated phono cartridges as accessories. For the British manufacturer, they’re a core part of the vinyl chain—developed side by side with its tonearms and turntables, not bolted on as an afterthought. With the launch of the Nd3, Nd5, and Nd7 last year, Rega made it clear that moving magnet (MM) technology still had plenty of room to evolve.

The Rega Nd9 sits at the absolute top of the company’s moving magnet lineup. It’s designed to be a statement: proof of just how close MM cartridges can get to true reference-level performance before stepping into the more complex world of moving coils. For listeners who want maximum performance without giving up MM convenience, the Nd9 is Rega’s strongest answer yet.

The Nd9 utilizes a new, symmetrical generator that works with miniature, parallel coils wound with 38-micron wire.

Borrowing DNA from the reference class

At the heart of the Nd9 is a boron rod cantilever, paired with a precision Fine Line nude diamond stylus. This is serious hardware, inspired directly by Rega’s flagship Aphelion 2 philosophy. Boron’s exceptional stiffness combined with extremely low mass allows the stylus to react instantly to even the smallest groove modulations.

What does that mean in practice? Faster transient response, cleaner tracking, more resolved low-level detail, and a soundstage that stays locked in place—even during complex passages. Quiet details come forward naturally, timbre feels believable, and the music flows without artificial sharpness.

The Nd series is Rega's first-ever moving magnet cartridge line to utilize the N55 neodymium magnet.

The Nd series is the first time Rega has used the N55 neodymium magnet in a moving magnet cartridge—the most powerful commercial magnet available. By using such a strong magnetic field, Rega could reduce the size and mass of the generator while increasing efficiency.

The Nd9 takes this further with a symmetrical generator design and miniature parallel coils wound with ultra-fine 38-micron wire. This carefully engineered geometry results in low inductance and low impedance, improving high-frequency extension and delivering excellent channel separation. These are design choices more commonly associated with advanced MM cartridges—and sometimes even MC designs—but here they’re applied without sacrificing MM compatibility.

The entire generator assembly is housed in a glass-fiber reinforced PPS body, chosen for its rigidity, low mass, and excellent damping characteristics. The goal is simple: eliminate unwanted resonances without adding unnecessary weight.

Thanks to this approach, the Nd9 remains easy to match with tonearms of moderate effective mass, making it a natural partner for Rega’s own arms—and many others.

Rega’s patented 3-point mounting system is also on board, ensuring precise alignment and mechanical stability when used with Rega tonearms. Installation becomes faster, more repeatable, and far less error-prone.

Each Nd9 cartridge is hand-assembled, individually tested, and backed by Rega’s cartridge rebuild program—allowing owners to refresh performance economically once stylus wear eventually sets in.

Designed as part of a complete system

While the Nd9 works perfectly as a standalone upgrade, Rega also offers it factory-installed on the Planar 8 turntable. For many users, this is the ideal solution: no cartridge shopping, no alignment stress, and immediate access to everything a high-end Rega deck can deliver—while staying firmly in the moving magnet world.

Seen this way, the Nd9 isn’t just another cartridge. It’s the natural culmination of the Nd series, aimed at vinyl lovers who want reference-grade performance without rethinking their entire phono stage or system architecture.

The new model is intended not only as a standalone upgrade for existing systems, but also as part of a factory-installed Rega turntable configuration.

Price and availability

The Rega Nd9 is available now from authorized dealers.
Price: approximately $880 USD

The Rega Nd9 doesn’t try to replace moving coil cartridges—it challenges the assumption that you need one to reach the top. By pushing moving magnet technology to its practical limits, Rega has created a cartridge that combines speed, resolution, and musical coherence with the everyday usability MM fans appreciate.
