Flagship-inspired tech, smart power options and real hi-fi performance — Schiit Modi 5 proves great sound doesn’t need a big budget.

Schiit Audio has spent the last decade proving that great sound doesn’t have to cost a fortune—or take itself too seriously. Since 2010, the American brand has built a reputation for no-nonsense engineering, sharp pricing, and products that punch well above their weight. To wrap up 2025, Schiit is doing it again with the Modi 5: its most affordable DAC yet, and arguably its smartest.

This fifth-generation Modi isn’t a stripped-down budget box. Instead, it packs some of Schiit’s latest tech, including the new Mesh digital filter and the Unison 384 USB interface—features previously reserved for much more expensive models.

The Schiit Modi 5 DAC also features Unison 384, Schiit's proprietary USB input with support for sources up to 32-bit/384kHz

According to Schiit co-founder Jason Stoddard, Mesh is the key ingredient that makes the Modi 5 special.

Mesh is Schiit’s custom digital filter, optimized in both the time and frequency domains, designed to sound far closer to the company’s flagship DACs than the price tag would suggest. The clever bit? Schiit figured out how to run this advanced filter on a 32-bit Microchip processor, paired with a proven ESS delta-sigma modulator—keeping costs down without sacrificing sound quality.

In other words: no off-the-shelf shortcuts, no generic filtering, and no “good enough” solutions.

The Modi 5 is flexible by design. You can power it directly via USB for a clean, simple desktop setup while still using USB, optical, or coaxial inputs. But if you want to squeeze out extra performance, there’s more.

Plug in an external power supply and the Modi 5 switches to Linear Override mode, bypassing the switching supply and running on a higher-voltage, regulated linear rail. The result is higher output levels, more headroom, and better dynamics—a rare feature at this price point.

As always, Schiit keeps things close to home. The Modi 5 is designed and manufactured in the USA, with SMD assembly handled at Schiit’s own facility in Corpus Christi, Texas. The metal enclosures are made in California, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to local production rather than anonymous outsourcing.

The Schiit Modi 5 is available now with a suggested retail price of:

  • $149 in black

  • $159 in silver

For that money, you’re getting custom digital filtering, a proprietary USB input, flexible power options, and performance that Schiit confidently claims outclasses anything else in its price range.

And knowing Schiit’s track record, that’s not just marketing talk.
