Audio-Technica has been making fine, high-quality wooden headphones for a quarter of a century – the first being the ATH-W10VTG in 1996 – and fortunately (because we haven’t heard a bad pair yet) it doesn’t seem to be dragging on on this particular production line . The Japanese audio company has just announced the release of the new ATH-WP900 portable headphones with a flame maple body into the European market.
In the past, the company has used many wood species for its more home-friendly over-ears, such as Japanese Kokutan striped ebony for the ATH-AWKT and Asada Zakura birch for the ATH-AWAS, and now maple has been chosen for its combination of stiffness and density, quality , which make them good candidates for stringed instruments such as guitars and violins. Speaking of stringed instruments, each unique flamed maple body is crafted by Japanese guitar maker Fujigen.
The ATH-WP900 promises to accompany its eye-catching aesthetics with audio products, with its 53mm large-diameter driver coated with a diamond-like carbon coating. The powerful magnet is designed to deliver “superior low-frequency sound,” while the foam ear tips with synthetic leather trim and rotating ear cup are made with long listening sessions and portability in mind.
Detachable A2DC connectors also ensure high sound quality and durability. In addition to the carrying case, the package includes detachable 3.5mm (3-pole stereo mini-plug) and 4.4mm (5-pole balanced mini-plug) cables.
