Anthem MDX-16: Multi-room amplifier tailored for audiophiles

Anthem MDX-16
Anthem MDX-16

Anthem presents MDX systems as more than mere multi-channel amplifiers for managing various music zones; they are positioned as high-fidelity universal solutions with extensive features. These capabilities include amplification, digital-to-analog signal conversion, room sound correction, low-frequency signal management, DSP processing, and additional functionalities.

Anthem MDX-16 provide 60 W per channel at 8 Ohms and 120 W at 4 Ohms, with the option to bridge for 200 W at 8 Ohms. The amplification is handled by specialized D-class modules. Each music zone can be configured independently, with the MDX-16 offering eight zones and the MDX-8 providing four. Features include independent Anthem Room Correction (ARC), dedicated subwoofer output, and adjustable tone and volume settings. The integrated DAC supports 24-bit/192 kHz conversion. The Anthem MDX-16 is equipped with two coaxial digital inputs and two optical inputs, while the MDX-8 includes one optical input. Additionally, each zone is fitted with one RCA (L/R) connector. Built-in matrix switches enable real-time signal routing from any analog or digital input to any output.

The Anthem MDX-16 is equipped with RSR-232 inputs, a 12 V trigger, an audio signal sensor, and Ethernet capabilities for automation. By connecting the MDX device to a wired home network, users can access a web interface for precise system adjustments. This interface also facilitates all primary tuning processes. The manufacturer has emphasized that the MDX series is fully compatible with leading smart home systems.

When considering audio solutions for a multi-room apartment or a country house, the complexity of technical details, including the required amplifiers, controllers, and interfaces, can be overwhelming. Installation is just one aspect; ongoing maintenance, software updates, and reconfigurations can add to the challenge. However, Anthem’s new equipment line aims to simplify the management of sound in multi-room setups, with the MDX-16 standing out for its exceptional technical specifications and user-friendly features.

Anthem MDX-16 features a total of 16 amplification channels, enabling it to support not only acoustic speakers but also to amplify passive subwoofers, providing ample channels for various audio needs. Each sound zone can be fine-tuned using the exclusive Anthem Room Correction system, ensuring that design elements such as large stained glass windows and floor tiles do not hinder the pursuit of optimal sound quality.

The Anthem MDX-16 was meticulously developed over a two-year period, with a significant focus on achieving exceptional ergonomics. This model features an intuitive control system that is so user-friendly that even a child can easily manage its setup and calibration. The interface operates over a network and is compatible with any device, allowing users to customize settings for different zones, reassign inputs, conduct room measurements, and calibrate the sound field. Additionally, it enables adjustments to playback levels in each room, all accessible from any tablet or smartphone. The level of convenience offered is remarkable. In the past, such tasks required the assistance of specialists equipped with separate remote controls, but the advanced ergonomics of today make that a thing of the past. Furthermore, the Anthem MDX-16 supports IP/RS-232 connectivity and is compatible with all major home automation systems, including Crestron and Savant, complete with downloadable drivers.

The amplifier is equipped with Ultra-Class-D modules that feature proprietary Advanced Load Monitoring technology. As previously noted, it delivers an output power of 16 x 60 watts at 8 ohms, enabling it to support up to 8 stereo zones. When paired with 4-ohm speakers, the power output increases to 16 x 120 watts. Additionally, when the device is set to bridge mode, it can provide 200 watts per channel with an 8-ohm load. The amplifier boasts a wide bandwidth ranging from 10 to 20,000 Hz with a deviation of just 0.5 dB. Notably, it includes digital-to-analog converters that handle PCM streams of up to 24 bits / 192 kHz alongside its digital amplification. Connectivity options are extensive, featuring eight pairs of RCA analog inputs, a pair of coaxial and optical digital inputs, an RJ-45 10Base-T/100 Base-TX network port, and eight Phoenix output terminals that accommodate cables with a cross-section of up to 12 AWG. Additionally, it offers eight RCA subwoofer outputs, two RCA pass-through ports, and an optical digital output, making it a highly desirable option for many users.

Each zone provides the capability for equalization, allowing for bass and treble adjustments of up to 6 dB and a balance adjustment of 10 dB. The subwoofers can be adjusted independently and can be connected in various configurations, including both low and high levels as well as bridge mode. Automatic measurements and room correction are facilitated through a supplied microphone that connects to the amplifier via a dual mini-USB input. The digital switching output enables the linking of multiple amplifiers, while the analog pass-through connectors allow for the series connection of several MDX devices.

Each zone is fully customizable; users can assign unique names, plan independent playback, configure bridge modes for high power needs, and make instant adjustments to crossover frequency, level, phase, and polarity for each subwoofer. Furthermore, the full digital/analog matrix switching feature allows any analog RCA, digital coaxial, or digital optical input to be assigned to any output, accessible through both a web interface and IP commands. As an added benefit, when used with Paradigm CI Anthem branded speakers, the MDX-16 can activate specialized DSP profiles that monitor voltage, current, and resistance, significantly enhancing the amplifier’s control over the speakers.
