Quad has launched the Elegan series, a new entry-level speaker range comprising the compact Elegan 1 monitor and the larger Elegan 2 floorstander. Both models continue the company’s long-running use of Kevlar cone materials while sharing related tweeter, crossover and bass-port technologies.
A Successor to Quad’s L Series
Quad positions the Elegan range as the spiritual successor to its L Series, which arrived in the early 2000s. The connection extends beyond the cabinet styling: like the 11L and 12L models introduced in 2002, the new speakers use Kevlar in their drive units.
The woven cones are impregnated with a self-damping resin intended to control unwanted resonances. Their development was overseen by Peter Comeau, Quad’s long-serving director of acoustic design. The company describes these as its most advanced Kevlar drivers so far.
Both Elegan models also use a 1-inch fabric-dome tweeter mounted within a shallow waveguide. This arrangement is designed to manage the tweeter’s dispersion and support a smoother transition through the midrange crossover region.
Elegan 1 Offers a Compact Two-Way Design
The Elegan 1 is a two-way monitor built around a 6.5-inch Kevlar mid-bass driver and the shared 1-inch fabric-dome tweeter. Quad specifies sensitivity at 86 dB and bass extension down to 44 Hz at the -6 dB point.
Recommended amplifier power ranges from 30 to 150 watts per channel. Each cabinet has an internal volume of 15.5 liters and weighs 8.9 kilograms, making the Elegan 1 the smaller option for systems where a stand-mount enclosure is preferred.
A rear-mounted Quad Airflow port assists the low-frequency output. As with any rear-ported speaker, the port arrangement is an important part of the enclosure design, although Quad has not provided specific placement guidance in the supplied product information.
Elegan 2 Expands the Formula into a Three-Way Floorstander
The Elegan 2 is a three-way floorstanding design with two 6.5-inch bass drivers. These operate up to 480 Hz, where a dedicated 5-inch midrange driver takes over. The midrange unit is housed in its own internal chamber, isolating it from the pressure generated by the bass section.
At 2.7 kHz, the midrange hands over to the same 1-inch fabric-dome tweeter and shallow waveguide used in the Elegan 1. Quad rates the floorstander’s bass extension at 32 Hz at -6 dB, while sensitivity increases to 90 dB.
The recommended amplifier range is 30 to 200 watts per channel. Each Elegan 2 weighs 27.8 kilograms, reflecting its larger cabinet, twin bass drivers and more complex three-way construction. A rear Airflow port is again used to support low-frequency performance.
Shared Crossover Components and Clear Range Positioning
Both speakers employ Linkwitz-Riley crossover filters. Quad specifies polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors for the midrange and high-frequency sections, giving the two models a common foundation despite their different driver layouts and cabinet formats.
The Elegan 1 is positioned as the space-conscious monitor in the lineup, while the Elegan 2 adds deeper specified bass extension, higher sensitivity and greater amplifier power handling in a floorstanding enclosure. Together, they establish a two-model entry point to Quad’s dynamic loudspeaker portfolio.
The combination of woven Kevlar cones, fabric-dome tweeters and established crossover principles also gives the range a direct technical link to Quad’s earlier dynamic speakers, rather than simply borrowing visual cues from the company’s past.
With one stand-mount model and one floorstander, the Quad Elegan series addresses two common system sizes through a closely related set of driver and crossover technologies. The Elegan 1 prioritizes compact dimensions, while the three-way Elegan 2 extends bass response and sensitivity for larger installations.
