The Cayin ID6 is a $1,899 desktop streamer, DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier featuring Android 14, dual ESS conversion and two 12AU7 tubes.

Cayin has introduced the ID6, a multifunction desktop audio component that combines network and local playback with digital conversion, preamplification and fully balanced headphone amplification. Priced at $1,899, the ID6 runs a customized Android 14 platform and offers selectable tube and solid-state timbres alongside Class A and Class AB operation.

Android streaming and high-resolution playback

The ID6 is built around a Rockchip RK3576 octa-core processor and a customized version of Android 14. Cayin says its changes extend from the low-level drivers to the audio framework, enabling system-wide bit-perfect output from supported playback software, including third-party Android applications.

Streaming services including Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, SoundCloud and YouTube Music can run directly on the component. Network features include dual-band Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet, DLNA, AirPlay and wireless song transfer. A six-inch FHD+ touchscreen provides a landscape-oriented interface, while the Cayin Control App offers remote access to playback settings, timbre selection and other device functions.

USB Audio and I²S paths support PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512. A 16-core XMOS XU316 processor handles USB audio, with UAC 2.0 and UAC 1.0 compatibility for use with major desktop and mobile operating systems.

Dual ESS conversion and three selectable timbres

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by two ESS ES9082Q DACs, with one assigned to each channel. Cayin uses channel summing within the converters’ multichannel architecture, creating independent left- and right-channel conversion paths.

The analog section offers Classic Tube, Modern Tube and Solid-State settings. Its tube circuit combines two 12AU7 dual triodes with MOS-FET devices, and all three timbres are available through the headphone, RCA and XLR outputs. Classic Tube is intended to provide the warmer of the two valve options, while Modern Tube is configured for tighter bass and a more expansive presentation. Solid-State is the alternative for users prioritizing precision and resolution. A front-panel window leaves the two tubes visible during operation.

Balanced headphone amplifier with two operating classes

For headphone listening, the ID6 employs a four-channel, fully balanced discrete amplifier using Nexperia audio-grade BJT transistors. Users can switch between Class A and Class AB modes, while a DC-servo circuit controls output offset.

The 4.4 mm balanced connection supplies up to 4.0 watts per channel into 16 ohms or 2.6 watts per channel into 32 ohms. A 6.35 mm single-ended output is also fitted, delivering up to 1.6 watts per channel into 16 ohms and 0.9 watts per channel into 32 ohms.

The ID6 can additionally serve as a preamplifier or fixed-output DAC. Balanced XLR and single-ended RCA sockets support both line-level and variable preamp operation. Maximum preamp output is specified at 12.0 Vrms through XLR and 6.0 Vrms through RCA, each measured into 47 kohms.

Wireless, wired and local-library options

Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity is based on Qualcomm’s QCC5125 platform and supports LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, aptX Low Latency, AAC and SBC. External high-gain antennas are included for both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reception.

Digital inputs comprise USB DAC, coaxial, optical and HDMI ARC. The ID6 can also work as a digital transport for an external converter through I²S-LVDS, coaxial, optical or USB Audio outputs, giving it a role beyond its internal dual-DAC section.

An internal M.2 NVMe 2280 bay allows an optional SSD to be installed for a larger onboard music library, although the drive is not included. Playback is also supported from built-in storage, USB drives, external hard drives and card readers.

Power supply, controls and finishes

A custom toroidal transformer feeds separate digital and analog power supplies. Cayin supplements this arrangement with DC-DC regulation, low-noise linear regulators and polymer molybdenum filter capacitors intended to limit ripple and circuit noise.

The front-panel volume control has an illuminated ring that changes color to identify sample-rate groups and DSD playback. The touchscreen can display spectrum visualizations and VU meters, supported by an ADC feedback circuit that analyzes the audio signal in real time.

Machined from aluminum alloy, the Cayin ID6 is offered in black and silver finishes. It is listed at $1,899, with the optional M.2 SSD sold separately.

With its Android streaming environment, extensive digital connectivity, dual ESS conversion and switchable tube, solid-state, Class A and Class AB options, the ID6 is designed to cover several desktop and two-channel roles without requiring separate source, DAC, preamp and headphone components.
