Few audio brands have moved as fast in the full-size headphone world as FiiO. What was once a company best known for portable players and DACs has, in just a couple of years, built a surprisingly broad and mature headphone lineup. It wasn’t long ago that the FiiO FT3 marked FiiO’s serious entry into full-size designs. Today, the catalog already spans close to ten models across both FiiO and its more budget-focused sub-brand, Jade Audio.
I previously spent time with the closed-back FiiO JT1, a model that impressed by offering honest sound and solid build at a very approachable price. The arrival of the open-back FiiO JT3 therefore felt like a natural evolution rather than a surprise—and in many ways, that’s exactly what it is.

Instead of chasing radical redesigns, FiiO chose a more refined path with the JT3. The core concept remains familiar: large dynamic driver, full-size comfort, and no unnecessary frills. What changes is the execution. The closed cups of the JT1 are replaced by open metal grilles, the driver has been reworked, and velour earpads take the place of synthetic leather. The goal is clear: more air, more space, and better long-term comfort—without raising the price.

On paper, the JT3 stays firmly in budget territory: 50 mm dynamic driver, open-back construction, 80 ohm impedance, 97 dB sensitivity, and a weight of 330 grams without cable. In practice, it feels like a step closer to “real” Hi-Fi listening than the price tag suggests.

Build, design and comfort
Visually, the JT3 looks far more expensive than it is. The large aluminum-magnesium mesh dominates the earcups, revealing the driver beneath and giving the headphones a distinctly studio-inspired character. Subtle branding—FiiO on the grille, Jade Audio on the headband—keeps things tasteful rather than flashy.
FiiO sticks with its proven double-arc headband design. The outer stainless-steel frame provides strength and stable clamping force, while the inner suspended strap spreads the weight evenly across the head. The velour earpads are a welcome upgrade: breathable, soft to the touch, and filled with memory foam that adapts well even if you wear glasses. They don’t rotate flat, but in everyday use that never felt like a real limitation.
Despite their size, the JT3 never feels cumbersome. They’re not “invisible” on the head, but the weight distribution is well judged, making long listening sessions easy and fatigue-free.

Inside the cups
FiiO equips the JT3 with a 50 mm dynamic driver using a composite diaphragm made from PEK (polyetherketone) and PU (polyurethane), finished with aluminum coating. The idea is simple but effective: PEK adds stiffness for clarity and clean treble, while PU brings elasticity for controlled, natural bass. Powerful N52 neodymium magnets ensure fast transient response and good dynamic contrast.
With 80 ohms of impedance, the JT3 isn’t difficult to drive, but it clearly benefits from a proper source. A phone or laptop will get sound out of them, but pairing the JT3 with even a modest dongle DAC or desktop amp tightens the bass, improves control, and opens up the soundstage.
Sound
The overall tuning can be described as a mild V-shape—lively, engaging, but never crude. Compared to the closed JT1, the JT3 sounds noticeably more open and balanced, with better separation and a more believable sense of space.
Bass
For an open-back design at this price, bass performance is genuinely impressive. It’s quick, punchy, and well controlled, with no unwanted bloom into the midrange. Acoustic bass, drums, rock, and jazz all sound convincing. Bass-heavy electronic genres may want more sheer weight, but what’s here is clean and musically correct.
Midrange
The midrange is where the JT3 quietly wins you over. Instruments sound natural and unforced, and vocals benefit from the open design—no boxiness, no “cupped” coloration. Male voices carry warmth and body, while female vocals remain light and expressive.
Treble
Treble is slightly emphasized to enhance detail and air. Cymbals shimmer, strings have bite, and recordings feel fresh and lively. On brighter tracks, sensitive listeners may notice a bit of sparkle edging toward sharpness, but overall the highs remain clean and spacious rather than aggressive.

Conclusion
With the JT3, FiiO has done something deceptively difficult: deliver an open-back headphone that feels like a genuine introduction to Hi-Fi, not a compromise. Build quality is solid, comfort is excellent, the sound is engaging and spacious, and the price remains firmly accessible.
You can think of the JT3 as the open-back sibling of the JT1—but that undersells it slightly. It’s more refined, more balanced, and more confident in its tuning. Most importantly, it proves that stepping into open-back, high-fidelity listening no longer requires a big investment.
The FiiO JT3 doesn’t just sound good for the money. It sounds good, full stop—and that’s what really matters.
