Lumin Music Systems has developed and launched a new network switch specifically aimed at the increasing focus on system optimization in digital hi-fi systems. The new N1 is positioned as a so-called audiograde switch, designed to minimize noise entering a system via the network infrastructure.

Keeping a computer network clean is an aspect that is increasingly being scrutinized as the performance of streaming applications improves. Network switches are usually not the first thing people think of when it comes to a hi-fi system, but they have become an important part of the discussion since streaming has evolved. Lumin believes that the network itself can play a role in overall system performance, and the N1 is designed around that idea.
The N1 features a built-in linear power supply, which replaces the switching power supplies typically found in standard network equipment. According to Lumin, this results in a lower noise floor, reducing the risk of electrical interference being transmitted to connected audio components.

Connectivity is distributed across four optical SFP ports and six isolated RJ45 Ethernet inputs. The presence of SFP makes it possible to implement fiber optic connections, which ensures galvanic isolation from the rest of the home network. In practice, this means that the electrical path between devices is interrupted, something that is often considered beneficial in noise-sensitive systems. After all, a fiber optic connection can transmit virtually no electrical signal.

The N1 also features an external 10 MHz clock input, allowing it to be connected to an external master clock, such as Lumin's own U2X or third-party options. The idea is to improve the timing, although, as with many things in network audio, the extent to which this makes a difference depends on the system in which it is used.
Lumin has also added a so-called “Stealth Mode,” which simply switches off all LEDs on the front panel. The idea behind this is to eliminate small amounts of high-frequency noise generated by the display circuits, as part of a broader effort to minimize interference. And you are immediately rid of unnecessary lights in the listening room.

The design of the N1's housing remains true to Lumin's familiar house style, featuring a milled aluminium housing available in silver or black. The clear intention is for it to seamlessly integrate with the brand's existing streamers and digital components. Of course, the N! can also be used in combination with (streaming) equipment from other manufacturers.
The Lumin N1 retails for $2,280 in a black or aluminium-coloured housing.
