Meze Audio has revised its 99 Classics model from about ten years ago and re-released it as the 99 Classics V2 or 99 Classics Next Gen. The original 99 Classics, first introduced in 2015, quickly became an icon, praised for its warm sound and high-quality craftsmanship. The updated version appeals to both loyal fans and a new generation of listeners, honoring the timeless design of the original while incorporating advanced technology.
Meze Audio 99 Classics: closed-back headphones with wooden earcups
The new second generation of Meze Audio ‘s 99 Classics retains the instantly recognizable silhouette, handcrafted character, and 40-millimeter drivers. The manufacturer claims a frequency response of 15 Hz to 25 kHz, an impedance of 16 ohms, and a sound pressure level of 103 dB (SPL/mW/1 kHz).
Meze Audio has also made significant improvements, claiming to be a dozen, including more balanced tuning, advanced driver matching, larger earcups, improved acoustic seal and dedicated bass port, a redesigned baffle, new clip-on ear cushions, better soundstage and imaging, a wider input jack, an improved cable and, finally, modern portability with the included USB-C DAC/AMP and 6.35mm adapter.
The Meze Audio 99 Classics V2 features walnut earcups that are CNC-milled, then hand-finished and polished. This enhances the material’s natural strength, rich color, and elegant grain.
The frame’s cast zinc hardware, finished in deep gold, adds both resilience and a timeless sense of refinement. Comfort remains a hallmark of the design, thanks to a self-adjusting headband crafted from vegan leather and supported by spring steel, ensuring an effortless fit during long listening sessions.
Meze Audio 99 Classics: detachable ear cushions and replaceable parts
The detachable ear cushions, made of soft vegan leather and medium-density foam, now use a secure six-point clip-in system, making them easier to replace while improving acoustic performance.
In keeping with Meze Audio’s philosophy, the 99 Classics are sustainably designed. Every component, from the drivers to the cables, headband, and earcups, is replaceable, extending the product’s lifespan. Furthermore, the second generation of the 99 Classics comes in fully recyclable cardboard packaging.
The new headphones also include a compact USB-C DAC/AMP for optimal performance with modern devices that do not have an analogue headphone jack.
The Meze 99 Classics V2 has a suggested retail price of just under $350.
