Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup is one of the most unusual in recent years. Instead of continuing with the “Plus,” Apple has introduced a brand-new iPhone 17 Air — the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever. Alongside it are the familiar iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
But which one is right for you? Let’s break down the differences in design, display, performance, cameras, battery life, and pricing to help you decide.

It is noteworthy that the iPhone Air is the only model in the new Apple lineup to feature a titanium frame
Design
-
iPhone 17
The standard model keeps things familiar with an aluminum frame and two rear cameras stacked vertically. It comes in soft pastel finishes with matching accents around the Apple logo. -
iPhone 17 Air
This is Apple’s first “Air” iPhone, designed to be ultra-thin (just 5.64 mm) and ultra-light at 165 grams. It uses a titanium frame to keep the slim body durable. But the thinness comes at a cost: only one rear camera, no stereo speakers, and a much smaller battery. -
iPhone 17 Pro & Pro Max
The Pros look the most premium, with a bold redesign that divides the back panel into distinct blocks for cameras and battery housing. Apple dropped titanium here in favor of a unibody aluminum shell. New colors include dark blue and a striking orange.

All iPhone 17 and Air models have identical matrices with a refresh rate of 1–120 Hz (even the base model) and Always-On support (shows widgets on the screen when it’s off), a pixel density of 460 PPI, and minimum, maximum typical, HDR peak, and outdoor peak brightness of 1 nit, 1000 nit, 1600 nit, and 3000 nit, respectively. In addition, all screens are covered with Ceramic Shield 2 protective glass.
Display
Every iPhone 17 model now gets a 120Hz ProMotion display with Always-On support, Ceramic Shield 2 protection, and up to 3000 nits peak brightness outdoors. The only difference is size:
-
iPhone 17: 6.3″
-
iPhone 17 Air: 6.5″
-
iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3″
-
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9″

Apple advertises the iPhone 17 as a smartphone that supports optical zooms of 0.5×, 1× and 2×, but in fact there are only two optical zooms (if the second can be considered a zoom) – 2× in the iPhone 17 is “optical quality”, that is, digital.
Storage
Apple has finally ditched 128 GB — all models now start at 256 GB.
-
iPhone 17: 256 GB, 512 GB
-
iPhone Air: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB
-
iPhone 17 Pro: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB
-
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB

The lack of an additional camera means that the Air does not support macro shooting or cinematic video shooting mode.
Performance
All phones run on Apple’s A19 chip family, but not all chips are equal:
-
iPhone 17 → Standard A19, the least powerful but still plenty fast.
-
iPhone 17 Air → A19 Pro, but with cutbacks (fewer GPU cores, lower cooling headroom due to thin body).
-
iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max → Full A19 Pro with advanced cooling and stronger GPU performance.
For everyday users, the difference won’t be massive — but gamers and video editors will notice the Pro advantage.
Cameras
-
iPhone 17 → Dual Fusion system with two 48 MP cameras (wide + ultra-wide).
-
iPhone 17 Air → Just one 48 MP rear camera. No macro shots, no cinematic video mode.
-
iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max → Triple 48 MP system (wide, ultra-wide, telephoto). Capable of ProRAW photos, ProRes video, and up to 4K/120 fps Dolby Vision recording.
If you care about photography or videography, the Pro models are the clear winners.

Apple is tying the iPhone Air to an external power bank.
Battery & Charging
Apple still hides exact capacities, but real-world use tells the story:
-
iPhone 17: ~30 hours offline video, 27 hours online
-
iPhone Air: ~27 hours offline, 22 hours online (but 40/35 with optional $100 MagSafe Battery Pack)
-
iPhone 17 Pro: ~33 hours offline, 30 hours online
-
iPhone 17 Pro Max: ~39 hours offline, 35 hours online
Wired charging hits 50% in ~20 minutes for most models — except the Air, which takes closer to 30 minutes.
Pricing (2025)
-
iPhone 17 → $799 (256 GB), $999 (512 GB)
-
iPhone 17 Air → $999 (256 GB), $1,199 (512 GB), $1,399 (1 TB)
-
iPhone 17 Pro → $1,099 (256 GB), $1,299 (512 GB), $1,499 (1 TB)
-
iPhone 17 Pro Max → $1,199 (256 GB), $1,399 (512 GB), $1,599 (1 TB), $1,999 (2 TB)

It’s safe to say that the iPhone 17 will more than satisfy the average user, so if you don’t see a legitimate need for other models, you can safely buy the basic one.
Which iPhone 17 Should You Buy?
-
Buy iPhone 17 if you want the cheapest way into Apple’s 2025 lineup without missing out on modern essentials like 120Hz display and dual cameras. It’s the best value for most people.
-
Buy iPhone 17 Air only if you absolutely love its ultra-slim design. Otherwise, the compromises (battery, single camera, no stereo speakers) make it less practical — especially once you add the $100 MagSafe Battery Pack.
-
Buy iPhone 17 Pro if you want the full Apple experience without going to the giant size. Its triple-camera system and performance edge are worth the premium.
-
Buy iPhone 17 Pro Max if you want the biggest screen, longest battery life, and the exclusive 2 TB storage option. This is the ultimate iPhone — and the most expensive Apple has ever sold.
In short: Most users should get the iPhone 17. Creators and power users should step up to the Pro models, while the Air is more of a niche statement piece than a practical buy.
