Technics unveiled the new SL-40CBT direct-drive turntable today at IFA 2025 in Berlin. According to the manufacturer, this new model continues the iconic Technics tradition while also boasting a fresh, contemporary design and practical new features developed for both hi-fi users and contemporary home audio enthusiasts. A phono amplifier and Bluetooth connectivity are built-in.

Technics SL-40CBT

The SL-40CBT retains the classic features of Technics’ previous turntables, such as the iron-core-less direct-drive motor and precision S-shaped aluminum tonearm. However, it features a sleek, user-friendly design to meet the expectations of today’s record enthusiasts. The turntable is aimed at both newcomers and existing users who now have an entry-level model. Its high-quality performance, simplicity, and elegant appearance make it a perfect fit for stylish, modern interiors, according to the press release.

“The turntable market is one of the core pillars of Technics’ business success worldwide. For the past 55 years, Technics has set the standard in this audio category. One of its most important features is the ultra-robust direct-drive motor, which has made Technics legendary in the turntable market,” explains Frank Balzuweit, Technics’ European Product Manager.

“Technics is synonymous with premium turntables for both the DJ and hi-fi markets,” adds Balzuweit. “Meeting our customers’ needs is what we constantly strive for. That’s why we decided to move away from our traditional turntable design and give classic Technics features, such as the refined, reliable direct-drive motor without an iron core, a fresh new look to appeal to a new type of vinyl music lover. With the SL-40CBT, we’re targeting music fans who are just beginning their vinyl journey and want a premium product that meets their high demands for audio quality,” Balzuweit concludes.

Technics SL-40CBT: features and innovations

The SL-40 CBT comes with a pre-assembled Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge. This widely used cartridge is known for its refined sound quality and excellent detail reproduction. The conical stylus ensures wide compatibility with common phono amplifiers in amplifiers or separate phono amplifiers.

For those who find it convenient, the SL-40 CBT has an onboard phono amplifier. It can therefore be connected to an amplifier without a dedicated turntable input. This makes connecting effortless and practical. Using the built-in phono amplifier is optional.

Fully in tune with the times, the SL-40CBT features Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for hassle-free wireless audio streaming to Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

Unlike traditional aluminum die-cast chassis designs, the SL-40CBT features a sleek, minimalist MDF construction with a high-quality finish. The turntable will soon be available in three modern colors: bold and striking Terracotta, subtle and refined Light Grey, or timeless and versatile Charcoal Black.

The new compact design not only elegantly complements contemporary interiors. It also complements the design of Technics’ SC-CX700 wireless speaker system , which is available in the same colors. This allows users to create a color-coordinated audio setup.

Technics SL-40CBT: direct-drive motor, aluminum platter and S-shaped tonearm

While the design has been revised, Technics has ensured the SL-40CBT delivers the premium performance the brand is known for. For example, the iron-core-less direct-drive motor remains for stable, precise rotation, with a high-precision control circuit, preserving the musical authenticity of even the most demanding music genres.

The cast aluminum turntable with reinforcing ribs and a directly mounted motor magnet has also been retained. According to the manufacturer, this ensures reliable power transmission and precise drive characteristics.

The redesigned S-shaped aluminum tonearm follows vinyl grooves with extreme precision, preserving the subtle nuances and musical dynamics of all vinyl records.

Finally, the SL-40CBT features optimized vibration-resistant isolation feet for flexible placement. This allows the SL-40CBT to be placed in the most suitable environment within the home without compromising stability and sound quality.

Technics has also considered sustainability, as the SL-40CBT is shipped in environmentally conscious packaging. The use of plastic has been significantly reduced by replacing polystyrene with cardboard. This minimizes the environmental footprint while still providing excellent protection during transport.

Technics SL-40CBT: price and delivery information

The SL-40CBT will be available from September 2025 at authorized Technics dealers. Pricing has yet to be announced.
