In 2016, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept coupe debuted, followed a year later by a similar convertible. Unfortunately, neither of these electric cars made it into production, and the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 roadster that was produced turned out to be nothing more than a modified AMG SL convertible. A few years later, Mercedes-Benz once again unveiled a luxurious two-door concept: the Vision Iconic.
The design combines features from the brand’s historic models with futuristic elements. For example, the front features the new illuminated radiator grille, which recently debuted on the GLC with EQ Technology electric crossover. The shape is intended to evoke iconic Mercedes models from history: the W108, W111 and 600 Pullman. The dashboard complements the long bonnet and narrow headlights.

From the side, the car resembles the aforementioned concepts, but the overhangs are shorter. The lines of the small windshield continue into the fender vents, and the sloping roof flows into a rounded rear end reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL Gullwing. The company’s chief stylist, Gorden Wagener, referred to 1930s automotive design as a source of inspiration.

The interior is decorated in an Art Deco style. It features a round four-spoke steering wheel and a glass structure called the “Zeppelin,” which houses both analog and digital instruments. The seats are upholstered in dark blue velvet. Mother-of-pearl inlays are also used, and the floor is decorated with a straw pattern, a technique developed in the 17th century and revived in the 1920s. The automaker has also created a collection of six men’s and women’s suits to match the interior.

Despite its nostalgic undertones, the prototype boasts futuristic technologies. Level 4 autonomy is enabled by a “neuromorphic computing system,” which is similar in principle to the human brain. It is claimed to be ten times better at recognizing its surroundings than current models, but technical details are not provided. It also features ride-by-wire steering and rear-wheel steering. The specifications of the electric powertrain have not been disclosed.

Finally, the Vision Iconic has a solar-powered body. This helps charge the battery, and under ideal conditions, the 11 square meter surface area will provide up to 12,000 km of range per year using sunlight alone.

Most likely, the new model will follow the fate of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6: nothing has been said about production possibilities.
