Esoteric N-01XE Brings Grandioso-Derived Digital Technology to the 01 Series

Esoteric N-01XE flagship network player and digital-to-analog converter

The flagship Esoteric N-01XE network DAC combines in-house digital conversion, extensive power-supply isolation and copper or optical network connectivity.

Esoteric has introduced the N-01XE, a flagship network player and digital-to-analog converter for its 01 Series. Derived from technology developed for the Grandioso N1, the substantial new component combines the company’s Master Sound Discrete DAC G2 with its fourth-generation streaming platform.

Discrete conversion without an off-the-shelf DAC chip

At the center of the N-01XE is Esoteric’s second-generation Master Sound Discrete DAC. Rather than using a conventional integrated DAC chip from an external supplier, the company has developed its own FPGA-based, multilayer delta-sigma conversion architecture using selected discrete components.

The dual-mono circuit contains 32 elements per channel, with separate clock drivers, logic circuits, capacitors and resistors. High-precision industrial MELF resistors are used in the core DAC circuitry, while the analog filtering stage incorporates Esoteric’s proprietary IDM-01 amplification module.

Dedicated FPGA processing algorithms handle DSD and PCM independently. The DAC architecture supports signals up to 22.5 MHz DSD and 768 kHz PCM, although the maximum accepted resolution depends on the selected input. Users can also access selectable digital filters and PCM-to-DSD conversion. The ES-Link5 input offers Rdot or bypass settings, while other inputs provide FIR, Rdot and bypass options.

Five independent transformers and dual-mono construction

Although the N-01XE is housed in a single stereo chassis, its conversion stage follows a fully dual-mono layout. The left and right DAC channels receive power from separate transformers, reducing shared electrical interaction between them.

There are five independent power transformers in total: two for the left and right conversion channels, one for the network engine, one for the digital circuits and one for the microcontroller. The principal supply section uses a fully discrete, low-feedback DC regulator instead of an integrated regulator circuit.

The network engine also has a dedicated linear power supply that operates independently from the audio supply. Its individual sections are fed through separate transformer windings, with a large toroidal transformer, custom capacitors and Schottky diodes among the specified components. The N-01XE does not contain power-amplifier output stages; its internal resources are concentrated on streaming, digital processing and analog conversion.

Fourth-generation network engine adds optical connectivity

Streaming duties are handled by the Esoteric Network Engine G4, a fourth-generation platform equipped with a high-capacity RAM configuration and a more powerful CPU. It also incorporates network-switch functionality and provides two network interfaces.

A standard RJ45 Ethernet connection supports conventional wired networking, while an SFP port enables optical network links when used with the appropriate module and fiber cable. Optical connectivity can electrically isolate the player from noise elsewhere on a network. The SFP interface can alternatively be used with a metallic Direct Attach Cable to create a more direct signal path with fewer interface circuits.

The RJ45 and SFP ports can operate simultaneously, giving owners flexibility when integrating the N-01XE into more elaborate network installations.

Digital inputs and clock architecture

The N-01XE can also operate as a DAC for external digital sources. Its input complement includes AES/EBU over XLR, coaxial, optical and asynchronous USB-B connections. The USB-B input accepts up to 22.5 MHz DSD and 384 kHz/32-bit PCM. Isolation circuits are placed between every digital input and the conversion stage to limit the transfer of electrical noise.

Timing is governed by an internal Master Sound Discrete Clock circuit. Its design philosophy is adapted from the OCXO-based clock module developed for Esoteric’s Grandioso G1X master clock generator. The player-specific implementation uses selected discrete parts and a large crystal oscillator rather than a standard packaged clock module.

Heavy-duty chassis and production

The N-01XE weighs more than 25 kilograms and uses a rigid, double-layer chassis made from thick aluminum and steel. Its internal two-level construction separates circuit sections while providing space for the extensive power-supply arrangement.

A 5-millimeter steel base supports the component at three points through Esoteric’s Pinpoint feet. Each foot combines a point and matching receptacle and is held in place by the chassis weight rather than being firmly bolted to the base.

Esoteric produces the circuit boards for its discrete DAC in its own manufacturing facility. Assembly includes soldering in an oxygen-free oven within a controlled cleanroom environment, reflecting the tight component tolerances required by the conversion design. Regional pricing and delivery details have not yet been announced.

With its proprietary DAC, isolated power architecture, optical networking option and extensive digital-input support, the N-01XE places Esoteric’s latest Grandioso-derived engineering in a single 01 Series network source component.
