Velodyne Acoustics has announced the MiniVee X Acryl, a transparent version of its compact MiniVee X subwoofer. Instead of the high-gloss black enclosure used for the standard model, the new variant uses thick acrylic panels that make the driver arrangement and internal electronics visible.
Acrylic Cabinet Puts the Hardware on Display
The MiniVee X Acryl takes a product category that is often designed to disappear into a room and gives it a more architectural role. Subwoofers are commonly placed out of sight when room acoustics allow, but Velodyne’s acrylic version is clearly intended to be seen as well as heard.
The transparent enclosure reveals the internal construction, including the driver system and electronics. Velodyne has not published separate dimensions or weight for the acrylic model. As a reference point, the black MiniVee X measures 30 x 29 x 29 cm and weighs 15 kg.
Acrylic loudspeaker enclosures are not new in hi-fi, but they remain unusual in subwoofers, where cabinet rigidity, vibration control and placement flexibility all matter. Velodyne’s move gives the MiniVee X a distinctive visual identity while keeping the familiar cube-like footprint of the existing design.

Dual 8-Inch Layout with Passive Radiator
The MiniVee X uses an 8-inch long-excursion active driver on one side of the cabinet and an 8-inch passive radiator on the opposite side. The remainder of the enclosure is closed, creating a compact system that uses the passive radiator to support low-frequency output.
Velodyne describes the opposing layout as force cancelling. Above the radiator’s tuning frequency, the active cone and passive radiator move in opposite directions, allowing some of their reaction forces to offset one another. The cancellation is only partial, because the moving mass of a passive radiator is selected for enclosure tuning rather than to precisely match the active driver’s momentum.
According to Velodyne, the active cone is driven by a motor system using dual ferrite magnets and a 2-inch voice coil wound with four layers of copper. The Class D amplifier is specified at 350 watts RMS at 0.5% THD, 600 watts at 2% THD and 800 watts maximum.

Frequency Range, Filtering and Adjustment
Velodyne specifies the MiniVee X with an overall frequency response of 18 Hz to 300 Hz, alongside a 32 Hz to 180 Hz figure with a ±3 dB tolerance. The latter specification is the more useful indicator of the subwoofer’s expected operating range, since the 18 Hz figure is listed without a tolerance.
The adjustable low-pass filter covers 30 Hz to 200 Hz with a 12 dB-per-octave slope. Phase is continuously adjustable across 180 degrees, giving users flexibility when integrating the subwoofer with main speakers and room placement constraints.
These controls are particularly important for a compact subwoofer, as low-frequency performance is heavily shaped by room boundaries. Placement, crossover choice and phase alignment can have as much practical impact as the hardware itself.

Inputs, Loop Outputs and System Integration
The rear panel supports both stereo and LFE line-level operation. Unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR inputs are provided, and each input type is accompanied by a corresponding output for daisy-chaining a second subwoofer.
Speaker-level terminals are also included, allowing the MiniVee X Acryl to be used with integrated amplifiers that do not provide a dedicated subwoofer output. A 12V trigger input is fitted via a 3.5 mm mini-jack, and there is also a trigger output with a five-second delay.
Velodyne includes a 5V/1A USB connection, but it is not a general-purpose digital audio input. It is intended solely to power the company’s optional Wi-Connect II wireless receiver, which is sold separately.

App-Based Setup and Room Correction
Setup is handled through Velodyne’s Auto EQ SUB app for iOS and Android, and a measurement microphone is supplied with the subwoofer. The app assists with setting gain, crossover and phase, then applies room correction to address low-frequency interaction with the listening space.
That correction capability is especially relevant below 300 Hz, where walls, floors and ceilings strongly influence perceived bass quality. Even carefully positioned subwoofers can suffer from peaks and nulls caused by room modes, making measurement-guided adjustment a practical feature rather than a convenience extra.

Availability and Positioning
The MiniVee X Acryl is available now and sits above the standard black MiniVee X in Velodyne’s range. The acrylic construction makes it the more visually expressive version, while the core specification remains centered on compact size, an 8-inch active driver, a passive radiator and app-assisted setup.
