Apos has introduced the SJY ARGOS electrostatic headphones alongside the Apos x ES Lab HYDRA amplifier. Developed through the collaborative Apos x program, the two components form a new personal hi-fi system while retaining compatibility with other suitable electrostatic hardware.

A collaborative electrostatic project

ARGOS and HYDRA bring together several independent audio specialists under the Apos x initiative. The program is intended to connect developers and manufacturers on jointly developed products rather than placing every stage of design under a single brand.

SJY Audio founder Jeffrey Yin designed the ARGOS headphones. The HYDRA amplifier is a collaboration between Apos and Hong Kong-based ES Lab, a company specializing in electrostatic audio equipment. The result is a coordinated headphone-and-amplifier pairing built around an established electrostatic connection format.

Large electrostatic drivers with 580 V bias

The full-size SJY ARGOS uses electrostatic drivers operating with a 580 V bias voltage. Each driver has a diaphragm area of 6,375 mm², making the transducer assembly a central part of the headphone’s specification.

SJY has also incorporated ventilation into the driver structure. This is designed to reduce pressure around the membrane, addressing the airflow conditions surrounding the thin electrostatic diaphragm without adding a separate mechanical driver system.

CNC-machined aluminum construction

The ARGOS ear cups are made entirely from CNC-machined aluminum. This gives the headphones a metal chassis rather than relying on molded cup housings, while the published weights provide a clear indication of the complete assembly’s physical scale.

Without the cable, the ARGOS weighs 431 g. The figure rises to 491 g when the supplied 1.5 m cable is included. Listing both measurements helps distinguish the weight worn on the head from the total connected package.

Standard Pro Bias connectivity

ARGOS terminates in a standard five-pin Pro Bias connector. Although it has been introduced as a partner for the HYDRA, the connection means the headphones are not restricted to that amplifier and can also be used with other compatible electrostatic headphone amplifiers.

That interoperability is an important element of the system’s positioning. Buyers can approach ARGOS and HYDRA as a coordinated pairing, while existing electrostatic headphone users may integrate ARGOS into an appropriate Pro Bias setup. Likewise, the HYDRA is presented as the dedicated amplifier developed alongside the headphones through the Apos and ES Lab partnership.

Apos has not detailed additional HYDRA circuitry or connection specifications in the supplied announcement, placing the initial focus on its role within the ARGOS system and on ES Lab’s electrostatic expertise.

The ARGOS and HYDRA expand the Apos x program into electrostatic personal audio through a collaboration with SJY Audio and ES Lab.
