Google has unexpectedly unveiled the initial developer preview of Android 16. Traditionally, the company has released this preview in February for the past four years, making this release three months earlier than usual. This aligns with Google’s revised Android release timeline, which anticipates the launch of version 16 in the second quarter of 2025, with one leak suggesting a potential date of June 3, 2025.
The Android 16 Developer Preview 1 introduces a variety of new features, including an enhanced Photo Picker for sharing images, support for health records, and an updated Privacy Sandbox. Notably, the codename for Android 16 is Baklava.

There are four significant updates in Android 16 DP1, but only two are pertinent to users. The revised Photo Picker aims to address a persistent issue: its limited adoption by various applications. Initially introduced in Android 13 to enhance privacy, this feature enables applications to access specific photos and videos from the mobile gallery without granting complete access. However, not all applications have implemented this functionality, and Google intends to rectify this situation. In Android 16, developers will have access to new APIs that facilitate the integration of the photo picker, thereby making it a more cohesive component of the application while maintaining user privacy.
The Health Connect application has undergone a significant update, enabling third-party applications to access and modify medical data in the FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) format. This functionality will necessitate user consent, and the relevant API is presently accessible through the early access program.

The Android 16 Developer Preview is not designed for everyday users, as these builds tend to be unstable. However, it is possible to install the firmware on compatible devices using the Flash Tool. It is important to note that Android 16 DP1 cannot be installed over Android 15 QPR2 Beta 1 without performing a data wipe. Once the initial developer preview of Android 16 is installed, the device will automatically receive subsequent updates.
