Chinese chipmaker Phytium has unveiled a new generation of high-performance processors that compete with chips from AMD and ARM. Phytium showcases the performance of next-generation server architecture and is a strong competitor to AMD’s Zen 3 architecture. This is probably the first time many have heard of this company, as it is limited to the domestic market, but Phytium has been there for almost a decade.

The company started by integrating the legacy SPARC instruction set and then shifted its focus to ARM. This allowed it to achieve ambitious goals – high productivity and a well-developed ecosystem. Over time, Phytium has made notable strides in improving processor generations and the company hopes to take the plunge in the coming years. Phytium is currently preparing to release a next-generation processor called FTC870. It reportedly shows a 20% performance improvement over its predecessor FTC860. Moreover, benchmark results from the SPEC CPU2017 application and official data show that the processor is capable of competing with the ARM Neoverse N1, and in some scenarios with the Neoverse N2.

It is noteworthy that the FTC870 with a clock speed of 3 GHz can compete with AMD Zen 3 processors, for example, with the EPYC 7443, which operates at 4 GHz. What Phytium managed to do is a breakthrough for the Chinese server market, since they have long been “cut off” from modern global components due to strict US sanctions.
