The T+A R1000 E CD receiver is a clear sign of shifting priorities in the world of digital audio. CD sales have been steadily and rapidly declining for several years, and advanced music lovers are transferring their accumulated collections to network storage hard drives. This trend is reflected in the sound quality of this component.

The T+A R1000 E CD receiver is essentially the first two components combined into a single housing. Many components were included without modification, but some had to be changed – at least to accommodate the internals of both devices within a housing of the same size.

For example, the output power was slightly reduced compared to the PA 1000 E – from 140 W (at 8 ohms) to 115 W (at 8 ohms). Unlike separate components, this music receiver lacks balanced connections; however, they might seem unnecessary. The disc player is also simpler, judging by its tray. However, the preamplifier unit was created specifically for this unit.

Owners of accumulated CD collections will be able to play them with the T+A R1000 E – the disc player tray appears to slide out from the bottom of the large display. The device features digital inputs and a built-in network client developed by T+A, allowing its DAC to be used to play digital streams from third-party sources. It also works with analog signals fed to the corresponding inputs and can be optionally equipped with a phono preamp.

Network functionality naturally includes support for internet radio and several music services, including Tidal, which is available in Russia. There's also a built-in FM tuner (FM-HD and DAB+ are also available) and Bluetooth (with aptX).

Power amplification is performed in key mode with shallow, frequency-dependent feedback designed to control the stability of the power supply—a traditional linear unit with a large toroidal transformer. All this hardware is housed in a robust and solid case with thick aluminum front and top panels and zinc-stamped, honeycombed side panels. The front of the receiver is, as is typical of T+A, generously adorned with small buttons. The large display is highly informative and easily visible even from a distance.

The rear panel of the receiver features three RCA line-level inputs, one of which can be used for an optional MM or MC phono preamplifier. There are also coaxial and optical inputs, LAN, asynchronous USB, USB for external storage, and USB for the Wi-Fi module. Outputs include line-level RCA for recording, Pre Out (RCA), two subwoofer jacks, and a coaxial output.

The E2 Link bus is designed for IP control. The model is equipped with two pairs of screw terminals. One of the line-level inputs, the one on the far right, can be upgraded with a phono preamp and connected to a turntable.

MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG-Vorbis, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, and ALAC files (up to 320 kbps and 32-192 kHz/16-24 bit) are accepted via the Ethernet input. To receive wireless broadcasts, three antennas must be connected to the receiver: one for FM radio, one for Bluetooth, and a USB port for Wi-Fi. The receiver can be controlled using the FM1000 remote control, the optional FD1000 radio remote control, the IP protocol, or the T+A Control app.
