Cambridge Audio Edge W: Exceptional power amplifier

Cambridge Audio Edge W
Cambridge Audio Edge W

The Cambridge Audio Edge W power amplifier is crafted with exceptional quality and boasts a robust metal casing, making it a worthy addition alongside renowned British High-End Audio brands such as Naim, Linn, and Chord. Dubbed “the finest amplifier ever produced by Cambridge Audio,” it operates in class AB, transitioning to linear A at lower levels. The design features an impressively short signal path, comprising only 14 components, and employs a fully symmetrical circuitry. This symmetry extends not only through the signal circuits from input to output but also within the power supply circuit, which utilizes a unique “symmetrical” double toroidal transformer. This design ensures a substantial power reserve while minimizing electromagnetic interference. The amplifier’s output power reflects its near-ideal voltage source characteristics, delivering 100 watts RMS at 8 ohms and 200 watts at 4 ohms. Additionally, the Edge W allows for signal output in its original form, with both XLR and RCA inputs complemented by outputs, facilitating the easy assembly of a bi-amping or tri-amping system using multiple Edge W units.

The design of the model features a completely balanced circuit topology. In selecting components, the developers prioritized auditory testing over technical specifications, measurements, and cost considerations. The power supply incorporates two toroidal transformers arranged vertically and interconnected in a unique manner. This configuration effectively minimizes electromagnetic interference, ensures exceptional power performance, and preserves a consistent tonal balance across varying volume levels. Operating in class XA, the model harnesses the advantages of both traditional class A and AB designs. Consequently, distortion has been reduced to negligible levels, while heat generation is minimized, enhancing the overall efficiency of the power amplifier.

The Cambridge Audio Edge W amplifier features a minimalist metal chassis with elegantly rounded corners on the front panel, which includes only a power/standby button. The rear panel is equipped with both balanced and unbalanced input connectors, along with a selector switch to choose the appropriate connection type. These inputs are complemented by corresponding RCA and XLR outputs. At the edges of the rear panel, you will find two pairs of screw terminals for connecting speaker systems. Additionally, the amplifier includes system bus connectors that enable simultaneous activation of the power amplifier and any connected source or Edge series component. The system bus input is integrated with a trigger connector. This model also offers an auto-off feature that activates after 20 minutes of inactivity, which can be disabled via a switch.

For optimal synergy and to unlock its full potential, the British company suggests pairing this power amplifier with the Cambridge Audio Edge NQ preamplifier/streamer. Additionally, the manufacturer highlights that the Cambridge Audio Edge W delivers a clean, powerful, and dynamic sound characterized by exceptional balance, musicality, meticulous detail, and a remarkable soundstage.
