Recently, news surfaced on the internet indicating that Apple would permit the installation of applications outside of the traditional App Store. This marked the first instance in Apple’s smartphone history, coinciding with the release of iOS 17.4. Subsequently, the announcement of the inaugural alternative application store, Setapp, followed suit.
In a press release by MacPaw developers, it was articulated that their objective is to establish a harmonious ecosystem wherein developers can flourish under a business model characterized by fairness and equity, irrespective of company size.

MacPaw further disclosed that the Setapp application store is nearing completion in its development phase, with the beta version slated for release later this year. Collaboration with cross-platform application developers has been integral to the product’s creation, paving the way for the migration of numerous applications currently available in the Setapp macOS version to iPhone smartphones in the foreseeable future.
As of now, details regarding the first-ever alternative app store for iOS remain scarce. It is anticipated that the store will likely mirror features found in versions for Apple computers. However, specific information regarding its functionalities and interface design is yet to be unveiled.
