Today, July 4, Mozilla officially released Firefox 115 and Firefox 115 ERS. The second is an extended support version of the browser designed for use in organizations. Firefox 115 will be the last version to support Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1 operating systems, as well as some macOS.
The most curious innovation was the ability to run only some of the extensions that Mozilla monitors on Internet resources. According to GHacks, there is very little information about the new feature. The developers briefly mentioned it on the support page, stating that it is for security purposes.
The new version of the browser will bring a number of interesting features and a heavily redesigned security policy for ad personalization.
You can activate it as follows:
- enter about:config in the address bar;
- click on the “Accept the risks and continue” button if a corresponding message is displayed;
- find the parameter extensions.quarantinedDomains.enabled and set the value to False (“False”);
- restart your internet browser.
Other changes and innovations:
- when switching from another browser based on the Chromium engine, users can import payment methods into Firefox if they were saved in the old web browser;
- optimized interface for importing data from other browsers;
- the browser now uses hardware video decoding on Linux systems based on Intel processors;
- developers returned to using the Cisco PpenH264 module in systems that do not support H264;
- Windows OS users with “low performance/USB drivers and Wi-Fi” can enable geolocation on a case-by-case basis, keeping the whole system running smoothly;
- password fields received support for undo and redo operations;
- Firefox color themes are automatically migrated to the same theme hosted in the Mozilla add-on repository.
It is also important to note that in Firefox 115, the developers have changed the privacy policy, introducing new features that allow you to personalize advertisements. Now the browser will collect information about the Internet resources visited by the user and create a list of preferences. It will become the basis for displaying personalized ads. In addition, Firefox users will be able to limit the collection of personal data by sites.
