Apple today announced the launch of Self Service Repair, which will give self-repair customers access to genuine Apple parts and tools. The program will be available initially for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Macs with M1 chips will be supported at a later date.
The launch of the service is scheduled for early 2022 in the United States. In other countries, the program will appear within the next year. It is noted that customers will have access to over 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers and 2,800 Independent Repair Providers with access to original parts, tools and manuals:
The initial program will focus on the most commonly serviced modules, such as the display, battery, and iPhone camera. The possibility of additional repairs will appear later next year.
Apple COO Jeff Williams said creating greater access to genuine parts gives customers even more choice when repairs are needed.
He added that over the past three years, the company “has almost doubled the number of service centers with access to original parts, tools and training.”
In order for the customer to carry out repairs safely, it is important that they first read the Repair Manual. The customer then places an order for genuine Apple parts and tools in the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store.
After repairs, customers who return a used part for recycling will receive a purchase credit. The new store will offer over 200 individual parts and tools, allowing customers to perform the most common iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 repairs.
Apple emphasized that DIY repairs are intended for individual technicians who have the knowledge and experience to do so.
At the same time, for the vast majority of customers, a visit to a professional repair center “with certified specialists who use original Apple parts” is the safest and most reliable way to repair.
