Epson sues competitor Vava for fraudulent advertising

The American division of Epson, motivating its decision by the fight against customer fraud, is filing a lawsuit against the Vava company. The latter, according to him, is conducting unfair advertising of its short-throw laser projector with a false brightness characteristic of 2500 lumens and 6000 lumens. Meanwhile, independent verification has shown that this figure is well below the 2500 lumens level.

“Vava’s lumen performance is misleading for quality home entertainment buyers. As a result, consumers, receiving products that do not meet their expectations, become disillusioned with the entire industry as a whole, ”said Epson America.

Buyers should be wary of terms such as “lux”, “LED lumens” or “lamp brightness” as they may mislead the amount of light entering the screen. This characteristic is defined by international standards issued by such recognized organizations as ISO and ICDM.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) – international organization for standardization
ICDM (International Committee for Display Metrology) – international committee for display metrology

The latter is the developer of the IDMS document, which details a methodology for measuring the brightness of white and other colors of projectors. A similar document is available from ISO 21118: 2020. The use of these standards completely eliminates confusion in the interpretation of projector brightness and allows for correct measurement and comparison.

Information Display Measurement Standards (IDMS)

Epson monitors the market closely to prevent consumer misleading. The company recently reached an agreement with Philips that all of its projectors will use industry-standard features in promoting all of its projectors. Last year, Epson sued four brands at once – Vankyo, WiMiUS, GooDee and Bomaker – for fraudulent advertising. In 2019, a Japanese manufacturer won an RCA and ONN-branded over-brightness case against Curtis International Ltd and Technicolor. And in 2018, Epson received damages in the amount of $ 5 million from iRulu in a similar lawsuit.
