Samyang announces V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE Autofocus Cine Lens for Sony

Samyang V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE for Sony cameras

About six months ago, we wrote in the news about an interesting line of autofocus cine lenses from the Korean company Samyang , which today was replenished with the Samyang V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE telephoto camera . Despite the fact that all four lenses in the line, V-AF 24, 35, 45 and 75 mm, have a T1.9 aperture, the new product has a T2.3 aperture. All lenses are designed to work in conjunction with full-frame Sony FE cameras. The new Samyang V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE lens is expected in early 2024 for approximately $540.

The author of these lines is just starting to make films; I shot our new short film on one camera with a 24-70 F4 lens and noticed that most subjects require focal lengths of 35, 50 or 70 mm. In fact, when dreaming of cinema lenses, you can aim at these three primes. However, sometimes you want to show the hero close up without getting too close to the actor, for example, when shooting with three cameras, this is where a 100 mm lens in combination with a T2.3 aperture will be just right.

Apparently, Samyang marketers carefully studied the wishes of users – many, like me, are afraid to switch to a completely manual focus, although they understand that sooner or later this transition is inevitable. The Samyang Cine series of lenses is designed specifically for beginners, offering to plunge into the world of film shooting, while maintaining fast and efficient autofocus, which, according to the manufacturer, works perfectly in conjunction with the autofocus systems of Sony cameras. The Koreans are also proud of the Samyang V-AF series lenses’ ability to display flesh tones.

Samyang V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE supports 8K high resolution. Of course, you can switch to focus mode manually or adjust the aperture by turning the focus ring.

Although all 4 T1.9 lenses in the V-AF line have the same physical dimensions, the 100mm telephoto is 13mm longer, this is due to the optical design, which consists of 9 elements in 8 groups, including two HR lenses and two ED. Despite the increased size, it has the same weight, focus ring position and front size.

Technical characteristics of V-AF 100mm T2.3

  • Maximum aperture: T2.3
  • Viewing angle: 25.4° (on APS-C 16.9°)
  • Minimum focusing distance: 70cm
  • Front diameter: 70mm (for compendium)
  • Filter diameter: 58 mm
  • Aperture blades: 9
  • Focus ring rotation: 300°
  • Size: Ø72.2 x 85.3 mm
  • Weight: 280 g

A 20mm lens is also expected in 2024. Despite the fact that the manufacturer several times emphasizes the fact that the 100 mm telephoto is 13 mm longer, it was easier for the designers of the official website to clone the 75 mm lens and write different numbers on it. As a result, the picture showing all 6 lenses does not entirely correspond to reality and can mislead the buyer
