Canon has stopped producing Canon EF-M cameras and optics

Judging by a number of indirect signs, Canon is in the process of closing the line of Canon EOS M mirrorless cameras. The production of optics for these cameras with a Canon EF-M bayonet mount has already been stopped.

The website of one of the specialized photo stores in Japan indicates that the Canon EF-M 28mm F/3.5 Macro IS STM compact lens has already been discontinued. The same story happened with the Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM lens, announced in 2018 (this is the fastest lens in the EF-M series).

It is reported that all cameras in the Canon EF-M line have already been discontinued. Now the company has begun to complete the production of optics for this format. It is separately noted that the closure of production of the Canon M50 Mark II camera, which was announced in October 2020, has already been confirmed. This model is no longer sold even in the largest foreign online stores of photographic equipment.

As expected, Canon has decided to focus on Canon RF system mirrorless cameras, which are available in both full-frame and APS-C sensors. In order not to create competition for its own new system, the company decided that the line of Canon EOS M cameras should be cut. By the way, Canon M50 cameras (both the first and second generations) were very popular, including in Japan . Because they are compact and provide high image quality.

One of Canon’s latest announcements of cameras with an APS-C sensor is the Canon EOS R100 model . Currently, this is the most affordable camera in the Canon line with a recommended retail price of 479.99 US dollars. It features the same Digic 8 processor and sensor as the compact 2020 EOS M50 Mark II, as well as the M50’s Canon LP-E17 battery, helping to create a more affordable version of the EOS R.

The camera is equipped with an OLED EVF electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 million dots. The SD card slot only supports UHS-I memory cards. The camera’s rear screen is fixed and not touch-sensitive.
