Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson will be released digitally on March 25th

Bong Joon-ho’s much-hyped sci-fi film Mickey 17 could be available digitally as early as March 25, after a disappointing theatrical run. The film, starring Robert Pattinson, had a challenging start in the US box office but has fared significantly better internationally.

By the end of its second weekend, Mickey 17 had grossed over $90 million globally, with $57 million coming from international markets. South Korea has been the film’s strongest market, with a whopping $17.9 million in box office revenue. Despite this, the film is still far from breaking even. With a production budget of $200 million, it would need at least $400 million to break even, which seems challenging given the current development.

Warner Bros. appears to have acknowledged the film’s weak earnings and has apparently decided to push the digital release forward in an effort to maximize revenue from other distribution channels. This could indicate that the studio is hoping for a better result through digital purchases and streaming, after the theatrical release failed to live up to expectations.

Despite an impressive director in Bong Joon-ho and a star-studded cast, Mickey 17 has failed to capture cinema audiences in the same way as the director’s previous successes, such as Parasite and Snowpiercer . The question now is whether the film will find a wider audience through digital platforms, or whether it will remain one of the year’s biggest commercial disappointments.
