DTS Play-Fi is a new 12-channel home theater mode for TVs

DTS Play-Fi

DTS Play-Fi multiroom wireless technology allows compatible devices from different manufacturers to work together to stream music, movie and TV soundtracks and other audio content throughout the home. The Play-Fi ecosystem is vast, from soundbars to amplifiers and standalone audio systems.

DTS isn’t resting on its laurels, however—the company is set to take Play-Fi technology to the next level with the introduction of a home theater mode for TVs that promises high-quality, object-based surround sound without the need for complex devices and wires.

The DTS Play-Fi immersive home theater supports 3D surround sound formats—Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced—to help reveal additional audio detail and bring the magic of Hollywood into your home with up to 12 channels of surround sound.

The surround sound system configuration depends on your wishes and budget. This could be a TV combined with a soundbar that streams a 12-channel soundtrack (not just stereo, as is the case with Bluetooth), or a full 7.2.4 surround sound system with separate audio systems to serve each channel. You can even use your TV’s built-in speakers as part of such a system.

The use of wireless communication channels, especially in a 7.2.4 configuration, makes it possible to solve the problem of delays when audio lags behind video. To solve this problem, some manufacturers resort to using expensive wireless components with closed broadcast formats. DTS believes that this problem has been resolved. Play-Fi is essentially software that runs over standard Wi-Fi protocols, so there’s no need for expensive components and devices can be easily updated.

DTS says that almost all Play-Fi compatible products will work with Play-Fi immersive home theater TVs that support 12-channel home theater. And the first such TVs after the firmware update will be 2023 models from Philips.
