Melco Audio S10: Audiophile two-box network switcher

Melco Audio S10

Melco Audio, a specialist in network audio, has released a high-end network switcher. It features a separate linear power supply that is claimed to improve the sound quality of networked audio. The dual case variant echoes the recently announced N10/2 flagship digital music library.

The S10 head unit is based on the heavily redesigned S100 network switch and has an improved power management section. The body of the head unit has also been greatly improved by using higher quality aluminum for the body, which the manufacturer says has increased rigidity and more insulation for the signal-carrying electronics. Shielded hard steel chassis provides additional mechanical stability.

Connections on the back include RJ45 Ethernet ports with different speeds: 4x 100MB and 4x 1GB, the latter useful for the Roon Core processor generating a lot of traffic. In addition, 2 1GB SFP (small form factor) ports are also included for fiber direct connectivity and compatibility with supported devices.

A large toroidal transformer forms the main part of the S10 power supply and is mounted on a solid base using special insulators from the Japanese company TAOC. The unit also features high quality Neutrik output connectors, as well as Oyaide Tokyo’s high precision 102 SSC conductor for the DC connection cable.
