Since its launch, Starfield has seen a significant decline in player activity. On Steam, the game has barely surpassed 6,000 concurrent players in recent months—a number that pales in comparison to Skyrim, which continues to attract far more users over a decade after its launch. Now, it appears Bethesda is considering a new strategy to revitalize the game: a PlayStation 5 release.
A recent discovery adds fuel to this speculation. Users of Bethesda’s official modding platform, Creators Club, recently noticed a PlayStation logo in the description of one of their mods. The logo quickly disappeared, but as we know: the internet never forgets.
It looks like Bethesda wants to rectify the situation with a PlayStation 5 release.
Microsoft’s new strategy points towards multiplatform
Rumors of a PS5 version of Starfield fit in well with Microsoft’s new approach to game releases, with the company increasingly showing interest in multi-platform distribution rather than keeping big titles exclusive to Xbox.
Back in January, Microsoft’s gaming division head Phil Spencer hinted at a more open approach. In an interview with Destin Legarie, he avoided guaranteeing that Starfield would remain an Xbox exclusive forever. He stated, among other things:
” I have no reason to hold back a game from a platform where it can find an audience and generate revenue for us. We’ve found that we can run a more successful business by making our games more accessible. “
Official announcement coming?
If Starfield is indeed headed to PlayStation 5, we can expect an official reveal at an upcoming Bethesda or Microsoft presentation. For now, these remain unconfirmed rumors, but with increasing signs of a multi-platform strategy, it may only be a matter of time before Starfield lands on Sony’s console.
