Nvidia unveils DLDSR: New technology to improve picture quality

Nvidia unveils DLDSR - new technology to improve picture quality

Nvidia has unveiled yet another technology designed to improve image quality and gaming performance. It is called Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution (DLDSR) and is an improved version of Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) downscaling technology. The company will add support for DLDSR technology to GeForce RTX graphics cards on January 14, along with a new driver.

According to Nvidia, DLDSR should work in “most” games and can be twice as efficient as DSR while maintaining the same quality. In the image above, we can see that the Prey runs at almost the same frame rate as its native 1080p, while actually rendering at 1620p for a sharper resolution. Thanks to DLDSR, the picture is rendered at a resolution higher than the resolution of the user’s display, which leads to an improved picture quality. In this case, the frame rate will remain unchanged.

DLDSR improves DSR by adding AI network that requires fewer input pixels, making DLDSR 2.25X picture quality comparable to DSR 4X but with higher performance. DLDSR works in most games on GeForce RTX GPUs thanks to their tensor cores, the company noted.

DLDSR, like its predecessor, will only work on graphics adapters with tensor cores, that is, on all GeForce RTX video cards. The technology will not be available to owners of GeForce GTX, GT and others.

Nvidia also collaborated with ReShade developer Pascal Gilcher to create and add three advanced post-processing filters to GeForce Experience.

  • SSRTGI (Screen Space Ray Traced Global Illumination), commonly known as “Ray Tracing ReShade Filter”, enhances lighting and shadows, creating a greater sense of depth and realism.
  • SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion) emphasizes the appearance of shadows near intersections of 3D objects, especially in low light conditions or indoors.
  • Dynamic DOF (Depth of Field) applies a bokeh (advanced blur) effect based on the proximity of objects in the scene, giving the game a more cinematic sense of tension.

Filters can be used as an addition to DLDSR, allowing you to significantly improve the visual component of games. The new driver will be available on January 14, according to Nvidia’s website, which also features high-quality comparison images showing how the new technologies work.
