Xbox Series S doesn’t improve on old titles like Xbox One X does

The Xbox Series S does not take advantage of the Xbox One X enhancements that are applied to older Xbox and Xbox 360 titles.

Xbox Series S looks a bit more like the Xbox One S.

When Microsoft revealed the Xbox Series S last week, the console manufacturer compared the console to the Xbox One. The Series S is four times as strong as that game console. It is striking here that no comparison with the Xbox One X is made. That console can, for example, improve games from the backward compatible catalog with all kinds of modern techniques, but the Series S cannot, despite the fact that it is a true next-gen console .

A Microsoft representative has confirmed this to game website Gamespew . When you play an Xbox or Xbox 360 title on the Xbox Series S, you will have to deal with the improvements that an Xbox One S would also make. You get access to auto HDR, faster load times, more consistent frame rates and improved texture filtering.

To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer’s original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.

In practice, this means that you cannot play a game like Red Dead Redemption (released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) in 4k on an Xbox Series S, while you can on an Xbox One X and Xbox Series X. The website Digital Foundry reports that this may have to do with the fact that there is less RAM. The Series S has 8 GB of usable RAM, while the One X has 9 GB. As a result, Microsoft cannot guarantee the same experiences.

It is true that older games look better on a Series S than on a One S, but that is something you can at least expect from a console with backward compatibility.
