Hands On: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

Samsung’s latest foldable mobile is the successor to the first Galaxy Fold, which came on the market last year after a long delay.

As we wrote in our test, the first Galaxy Fold suffered a bit from being on the market about six months late, and moreover, the foldable screen seemed a bit fragile.

Samsung had managed the case with the Galaxy Z Flip, and it is the same type of screen – made of so-called Ultra Thin Glass, a kind of glass alloy with a thin layer of plastic as a protective layer and flexible glass underneath – which has found its way to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

At the same time, it is noticeably more robust than its predecessor, and it’s not just a statement cut from Samsung’s own press material. In connection with a presentation of the product with a product trainer from Samsung, we had a few minutes to test the new foldable smartphone in practice, and the much more solid and robust construction you notice immediately as you have your mobile in your hands.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 can stand at an optional angle, and the so-called sweeper technology prevents dust and dirt from entering the hinges. (Photo: Peter Gotschalk)There are also a few other significant design differences between the old Galaxy Fold and the new Galaxy Z Fold 2.

First, the selfie camera on the large, primary screen is no longer separately placed in the large slice that marred the former Galaxy Fold. Instead, the camera is now visible through a punched hole in the screen. This means, among other things, that the foldable screen has grown so that it now measures 7.6 “. In comparison, the first Galaxy Fold had to” suffice “with a foldable screen of 7.3”.

The foldable mobile comes in the colors Mystick Bronze and Mystic Black, but you can buy hinges in the colors Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold, Metallic Red or Metallic Blue. The original hinge can then be replaced with a new one in a different color, so that you can put your personal touch on your Galaxy Z Fold 2. (Photo: Peter Gotschalk)Second, Samsung has changed the hinge that connects the two halves of the foldable mobile. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 thus gets a completely new hinge, where the hinge area itself is built into a form-fitting cylindrical housing.

“In the development of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, we have listened carefully to the users’ feedback on its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold, to improve the phone’s hardware while creating an even better user experience. In addition, we are collaborating with Microsoft and Google, among others, on the development of the foldable phones, so that everything from Office package to Android apps is adapted specifically to the phone. We are very proud of the Galaxy Z Fold 2, “says Claus Holm, Director of IM & Country Manager at Samsung Denmark about the new smartphone.

Improved configuration

The better user experience requires a larger front screen and an improved processor, among other things. stand for.

The original Galaxy Fold had a small, amputated 4.6 “front screen that could only be used for the simplest functions. But the new Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with a 6.2” front screen, which is probably narrow, but still has enough space to use the foldable smartphone as a regular mobile without unfolding it.

And where the Samsung Galaxy Fold, as mentioned, suffered a bit from the fact that it came on the market with an “outdated” processor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has been equipped with the pt. fastest processor on the market: Snapdragon 865+ with 5G. In addition, the foldable screen has the same dynamic 120 Hz refresh rate as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Then it does not get much better.

Samsung Care +, which is valid for one year, is included free of charge with the purchase of Galaxy Z Fold 2. The insurance includes i.a. one replacement of the foldable screen. (Photo: Peter Gotschalk)
