LG UltraFine 32EP950 – LG’s first OLED monitor

LG unveiled not only new OLED TVs at CES 2021, but also an OLED monitor. The new LG UltraFine 32EP950 will come in 4K UHD resolution and is likely to be in the top end.

A little later, the South Korean company LG revealed in more detail the technical characteristics of its OLED monitor. Let’s try to consider the pros and cons of the UltraFine OLED Pro Display 32EP950 based on the data already reported by LG.

LG 32EP950 – pros and cons

Display

Display brightness is positioned as: DisplayHDR 400 True Black. However, there is no HDMI 2.1 port . Unfortunately, the screen only works at 60Hz. The LG UltraFine 32EP950 monitor can be considered quite unusual as OLED monitors are still rare and here’s why.

If you use a computer not only for playing games and watching videos from YouTube, then it will be easy to guess that the main content on the computer is static. Many people know that this kind of content is exactly the Achilles’ heel for OLED displays, because screen burnout can occur.

This risk is much higher when working on a PC than when watching movies, TV series, and other TV shows. However, the company is still releasing the new LG UltraFine 32EP950 in 4K (UHD) resolution. But there is other news that may provide some explanations. LG is positioning its UltraFine 32EP950 monitor as a professional work monitor.

As we recall, until this time LG did not have OLED displays smaller than 48 inches. The answer lies in the fact that the company uses a non-LG Display OLED panel in this 32EP950 monitor.

We talked about this company a couple of years ago. JOLED’s production is based on the inkjet method. Therefore, it is possible that the risk of burnout in JOLED screens is much lower than in panels from LG Display. Unfortunately, we do not yet have information on whether the monitor in question has HDR standards.

Connections

The 32EP950 monitor, like the others, has a USB Type-C connection with Power Delivery (90W) on the rear panel and three ports for USB Type-A. In addition, with the KVM switch, two connected systems can be controlled with a single mouse and keyboard, without the need to physically switch cables.

LG’s OLED monitor offers one HDMI port and two DisplayPort video connectors. Two color spaces, DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB, up to 99% coverage. Unfortunately, at the moment we do not know anything about other technical characteristics. For gamers, for example, parameters such as response time and refresh rate will be very interesting aspects.

32EP950 Price

Currently: January 2021 LG has not yet announced the price of the LG UltraFine 32EP950, nor the release date for this model. We don’t even know which versions the DisplayPort and HDMI ports correspond to. HDMI 2.1 is sure to please a lot of users.

However, the fact that LG has not emphasized this point so far suggests that the monitor port will likely still use HDMI 2.0. In conclusion, it is worth noting that this article should be considered news. When more information becomes available, we will try to review the LG 32EP950 in a separate article.
