Korean sources say that LG Display is exploring the possibility of increasing the brightness of OLED screens by 20% through the use of microlenses. This method is remarkable in that it does not require serious intervention in the existing structure and does not lead to an increase in energy consumption.

The estimated value of peak brightness, which developers are trying to achieve, is 1200 nits . At the same time, for standard OLED panels , used today in budget TV models ( for example, LG A2 ), this figure is 800 nits , and their new premium counterparts OLED.EX give out 1000 nits .
However, even so, LG will be seriously behind Samsung’s competing QD-OLED design , which reaches 1500 nits of brightness at peak.
If the tests are successful, the microlens technology could be introduced into mass production as early as next year. By the way, it is already used in OLED screens of smartphones, for example, in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra model .
On May 10, 2022, at the Society for Information Display (SID) show in California, USA, LG unveiled a 77-inch 8K TV based on the latest OLED.EX panel using Meta-lit Lens Array (MLA) microlensing technology to achieve unprecedented for OLED peak brightness of 2000 nits.
