Apple TV 4K now supports HDMI 2.1 QMS

The 2022 Apple TV 4K set-top box is the first media player to support QMS ( Quick Media Switching ) technology, which makes video frame rate switching seamless.

ImageFollowing the introduction of the third generation of the Apple TV 4K set-top box in late 2022, Apple has promised to add QMS support with a later tvOS update. And she kept her promise – the QMS option appeared in the settings in the system menu of the set-top box. QMS technology can be activated on Apple TV 4K (2022) under “Settings” -> “Video and Audio” -> “Match Content” -> “Quick Media Switching” -> “On” .

Combined with Apple TV 4K’s “Match Frame Rate” feature, QMS allows you to seamlessly play video at frame rates of 23.976Hz, 24.00Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, etc. provided that the image resolution, color and other basic parameters do not change. This ensures smoother video playback when switching between streaming services and video applications.

QMS technology must also be supported on your TV. To date, the only brand that has announced support for QMS in some of its 2023 models is LG Electronics. Apple has not announced plans to support QMS on earlier versions of the Apple TV 4K.
