Bose recalls over a million subwoofers due to fire risk

Bose has announced a recall of more than a million older subwoofers used in branded home theater systems because they pose a potential fire hazard . The firm has received 21 complaints from around the world about bass modules igniting or melting, including fires caused by them.

In the US, these units were sold between January 1994 and April 2007 through the official Bose.com website and retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, and Sear’s. The global recall affects subwoofers from the Bose Acoustimass , Lifestyle and Companion series of home theater kits .

The full list of subwoofers affected by the recall can be found on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission page . Or you can check your subwoofer on the official Bose website. If you find out that your subwoofer is subject to a recall campaign, the manufacturer recommends that you stop using it immediately. You can contact Bose for a free repair or a 40% discount to replace the kit with a modern model.

Of the one million subwoofers sold, Bose estimates that about 884,000 were in the US, 98,000 in Canada and 18,000 in Mexico.
