Beolab 28: Bang & Olufsens most advanced active loudspeaker system to date

The Beolab 28 is “Bang & Olufsen’s most advanced active loudspeaker system to date”. This is how Christopher Poulsen, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Management, Bang & Olufsen, described the new product.

The elongated cylindrical speakers receive a set of five specially designed speakers. This is a 6.5 “down-firing woofer, a pair of 3” full-range drivers and an inch dome tweeter. Each is powered by its own Class D amplifier with a maximum output of 225 W for the woofer and 100 W for the other four speakers.

A pair of such speakers is ready to give out a loudness of 110 dB (95 dB – at low frequencies). Sound character adjustment uses proprietary Beam Width Control technology with a change in “beam width” and directivity.

For this, Beolab 28 is equipped with swivel curtains – fabric or wood (in several options to choose from). Separately, the sound of low frequencies for a specific room will be corrected by another technology – Active Room Compensation.

Beolab 28 can be operated in a floor or wall position (mounting is provided). Music to the speakers can be streamed via Chromecast, Airplay or Bluetooth. They are complemented by Spotify Connect and branded Bang & Olufsen Radio.

The speakers support audio transmission using WiSA and proprietary Powerlink technologies, both work with a signal resolution of 24 bit / 48 kHz. In addition to multiroom using the same Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast, a proprietary version of Beolink Multiroom is promised with the nearest firmware.

The Beolab 28 touchscreen control panel is located at the top of the speaker and is activated by a proximity sensor. In particular, the listening mode can be selected here. Access to the full range of functions will be provided by the remote controls: Beoremote Halo, Beoremote One BT – or a branded mobile application.

A pair of Beolab 28 speakers in Europe costs 14,750 euros in fabric and 16,500 euros in wood.
