Sony a9 III to get 50MP sensor?

Sony a9 III to get 50MP sensor
Sony a9 III to get 50MP sensor

The Sony a9 III camera is expected to adopt the 50-megapixel multi-layer CMOS sensor from the Sony α1 camera . Note that this rumor is not the first, they began to appear 2 years ago. But now it has become more relevant, as the company needs to introduce a camera that is a direct competitor to the new Nikon Z 8 .

Engineers also cannot install this sensor in the Sony α7 V camera, as it is a semi-professional grade camera. They also cannot improve the performance of the Sony α7R series camera, since the resolution has already exceeded 60 megapixels, which limits the processing power. So now there are two options left: either radically upgrade the Sony α9 series with the same basic specifications as the Sony Alpha A1 and bring it to market.

The other option, which is not as good, is to introduce a new line of cameras that will compete with the Z 8. So it makes more sense for Sony to go with the A9 III variant, and here is a possible set of specs we might see in a future camera:

Sony α9 III Expected Specifications

  • 50 MP Exmor RS BSI multi-layer CMOS sensor
  • Photographing: up to 60 fps
  • ISO: 50-102400
  • Video: 8K 30p and 4K 120p in 10-bit
  • 3.7 million-dot electronic viewfinder (no dimming)
  • 759 AF points. Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF
  • 5-axis SteadyShot image stabilization
  • Two CFexpress Type A/SD card slots

Note that so far these are just rumors about the upcoming camera, so you should not be critical of them.
