Sigma: We’re working on a one-of-a-kind telephoto lens that’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen

Sigma: We are developing a unique telephoto lens that has never been seen before

Sigma’s CEO, Kazuto Yamaki, recently sat down for an extensive interview at the company’s new Tokyo headquarters. He shared some exciting news about a forthcoming telephoto lens that he claims is “unlike anything we’ve seen before.” This innovative lens is designed specifically for sports and wildlife photographers.

“I’m really thrilled about this new telephoto lens that has never been made before. It’s going to be a game-changer for sports and wildlife photographers,” Yamaki mentioned during the chat.

While the company is keeping specifics under wraps, we can make some educated guesses based on the CEO’s comments. It seems likely that this new lens will be a telezoom rather than a fixed focal length, according to one source.

The potential for a major upgrade in fixed focal length telephoto lenses could come from a wider aperture. However, wildlife photographers generally prefer lenses with an F/4 aperture at longer focal lengths. Increasing the aperture to F/2 might not be ideal for wildlife photography, as the shallow depth of field isn’t typically beneficial in that context.

I can’t provide a specific release date, but we’re putting in a ton of effort on the product right now, said Sigma’s head, who is really pumped about the new offering.

On another note, it seems that the optics for the Canon RF mount probably won’t be coming out anytime soon. The company has just started adapting some of its older lenses for these cameras, and there hasn’t been any talk about developing anything exclusively for them yet. To kick things off successfully, they would need to first adapt the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses for the Canon RF before exploring more innovative options, according to a foreign industry publication.

That said, it’s worth noting that lenses for full-frame Canon RF cameras will eventually make their debut.

Lastly, Sigma’s new telephoto lens, which has the CEO buzzing with excitement, might be unveiled in February at the CP+ exhibition, the biggest event of its kind, happening from February 27 to March 2, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan.

Previously, patents were discovered for the following Sigma lenses:

Sigma 60-700mm F/4.5-7.4
Sigma 50-500mm F/4.5-6.5

Sigma’s newest standout lens is the versatile high-aperture zoom, the Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN.

With a zoom ratio of 3.75x (compared to the standard 2.9x of the 24-70mm), Sigma assures that you won’t have to sacrifice image quality, no matter what focal length you pick.

The new Sigma 28-45mm F/1.8 DG DN Art lens is all about versatility. It brings together three focal lengths—28mm, 35mm, and 45mm—into one zoom lens, making it perfect for various shooting situations. Plus, it keeps that sweet maximum aperture like a prime lens, so you can easily switch up your shots as conditions change.
