Samyang Optics has officially unveiled the new AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 FE autofocus lens , designed specifically for Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras. A feature can be called an aperture of F2 at the wide-angle position of 35 mm and F2.8 at the telephoto position. Thanks to the zoom range, the company positions the lens as an all-rounder – it will be useful for both portraits and travel photography. The lens is fully compatible with the autofocus features of today’s Sony mirrorless cameras, including hybrid AF, eye AF, direct manual focus (DMF) and focus peaking.

Focal length from 35mm to 150mm

As a rule, zoom lenses with a wide range of focal lengths do not boast wide apertures. Here, the Korean company Samyang took a step forward – the lens is both universal and its aperture did not let us down. It will appeal to both portrait photographers and videographers, useful for reporting and travel, when you can take one camera and one lens with you.

Samyang claims that by using a metal frame, the build quality has been improved – the lens has become more durable. There is a zoom lock in the 35mm position, which will be convenient for transportation.

The optical design consists of 21 elements in 18 groups, including 12 special lenses, and the manufacturer promises excellent optical performance throughout the zoom range, from wide to telephoto. Ultra Multi-Coating technology has been applied to reduce glare and ghosting. Combined with Sony’s full-frame sensors, it promises excellent edge-to-edge sharpness.

Of course, the F2 aperture promises to effectively separate the subject from the background, drawing beautiful bokeh on out-of-focus objects. 9 aperture blades allow you to shoot pretty nighttime cityscapes.

The autofocus system of the lens is fully compatible with Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF functions. Autofocus is handled by a fast linear stepping motor, which the company says does a great job tracking the lens.

There are 3 configurable custom switches on the lens barrel – in the MODE 2 position, the focus ring will control aperture adjustment when autofocus mode is on. MODE 3 activates the function for shooting video “Dolly Shot”. There are two focus lock buttons in the manual focus position.

Video Features

  1. “Dolly Shot” – when rotating the zoom ring while tracking an object, the lens allows you to simulate the effect of the movement of the camera cart.
  2. In linear manual focus mode, focus movement is constant and does not depend on the speed at which the focus ring is rotated 300°.
  3. After focusing on a subject in manual focus mode, you do not need to readjust the focus even if you zoom in or out.

The AF 35-150mm F2-2.8 FE allows close-up shots with a minimum subject distance of 33cm at the 35mm focal length and 85cm at the 150mm focal length. In combination with the aperture of the lens, you can expect spectacularly blurred backgrounds when shooting close-ups.

The lens is weatherproofed in 12 places throughout the body and at the bayonet connection to the camera. In addition, the lens is simply beautiful and looks great on Sony cameras.
