Børresen unveils M6 flagship speakers

Børresen M6
Børresen M6

The Danish brand Børresen , owned by Audio Group Denmark, will show at the High End Show 2023 opening on Thursday in Munich its new flagship speaker model Børresen M6 , as well as the younger floor model M 3 , presented  just a month ago in Chicago. The design of the novelty is inspired by the brand’s debut M1 monitors and is a logical continuation of the design concept, which turned out to be not only aesthetically attractive, but also effective in terms of sound quality.

When developing the Børresen M Series acoustics, the main goal of the engineers was to challenge existing technological limitations and become a pioneer in new areas of audio technology. This includes redesigning loudspeaker components, finding effective ways to deal with resonances and vibrations, and finding materials that maximize sound quality.

The M-series mid/bass drivers use a 3D printed zirconia basket with an optimized topology for maximum rigidity and thus minimum vibration. The basket, according to Børresen experts, is not just a frame for attaching a diffuser. The energy generated by the diffuser is also stored by the structure behind it. Therefore, the goal was to eliminate the noise of the basket, ensuring its maximum rigidity. The research was carried out using computer-optimized finite element methods, resulting in a topology-optimized speaker basket 3D printed from an exclusive zirconium material. Thanks to the 3D printing process, the cavities of the basket are filled with zirconium powder, which gives it additional shock-absorbing properties.

The M-series speaker cone consists of four layers laminated into a single unit: two layers of carbon fiber, a layer of aramid honeycomb spacers between them, and an Ansuz Supreme coated titanium shell. The combination of these materials gives the diffuser unique properties that provide maximum rigidity with minimum noise levels. Titanium has excellent resonance control properties. Ansuz Supreme coating provides additional acoustic optimization of the cone surface. This coating is applied to the titanium shell using a Hi-PIMS (High Power Pulsed Magnetron Sputtering) machine to create a very thin and uniform layer of zirconium, followed by a layer of tungsten and finished with a layer of aluminum chromium nitride.

The Børresen brand uses iron-free magnetic drivers in all of its loudspeakers. Their inductance is about ten times lower than conventional drivers. This exceptionally low inductance in the M6 has been further reduced to an unprecedented level – about 12 times lower than the inductance level of conventional iron-based drivers.

All metal components of the Børresen M Series loudspeakers undergo a cryogenic treatment that takes three days. During the first 24 hours, the metal undergoes a cooling process from room to cryogenic temperatures. Over the next 24 hours, the metal parts are kept at a temperature of about -196°C before the temperature gradually returns to room temperature over the next 24 hours. Gradual cooling and heating are critical to prevent heat stress. This process hardens and compresses the grain structure of the metal components and reduces the internal residual stress that occurs when the metal solidifies from its liquid phase to a solid phase.

The ribbon tweeter used in the Børresen M6 is enclosed in a sealed chamber. The emitter operates from 2.5 kHz and has a sensitivity of 94 dB. The tweeter membrane has an extremely low mass – at the level of 0.01 grams, which provides it with low inertia and the highest speed of operation.

Børresen M6 speakers are equipped with six 4.5″ M-series drivers. Two of them serve the mid-range and mid-bass region, while the remaining four provide a low-frequency foundation. All Børresen M6 speakers are internally wired with Ansuz’s flagship Gold Signature speaker cable. Like the M3 model, the Børresen M6 speakers offer bi-wiring capability.

The Børresen M6 loudspeakers are offered in white and black piano lacquer finishes at a suggested retail price of 540,000 euros for European customers .
