Samsung is the leader among Android device manufacturers in terms of software support. For some smartphones, the company provides 5 years of updates: 4 years of Android OS release and another year of security patches. The South Korean giant is now considering extending support to meet industry standards.

This has become especially true after Google announced this week that its latest and future Pixel smartphones will receive seven years of software support. According to SamMobile, Samsung management is actively discussing next steps regarding long-term security updates after five years of support. The chief engineer and top manager of the Mobile eXperience division noted at the developer conference that in light of the upcoming regulations, Samsung is preparing to go beyond the current five-year support period.

The company currently provides updates to more than a billion devices monthly and more than 10 billion annually. Samsung has put an incredible amount of resources into this. It’s worth noting that the pace at which it is now sending out new security updates is impressive. The manufacturer’s intention to extend the support period for its devices most likely does not mean that Samsung will offer more than four Android OS updates. We are talking about enhanced security support.

Google currently offers a record support period of 7 years. It is followed by Apple (6 years) and Fairphone (5 years). Samsung, OnePlus, Huawei and Xiaomi promise 4 years of updates, Motorola and Nothing – 3 years.
