Cubot launches J20: 4-inch screen smartphone for less than $100

Cubot J20
Cubot J20

Believe it or not, in the middle of 2023 smartphones with 4-inch screens are still being manufactured, and the Cubot J20 is the reliable example of one. This is therefore a basic range mobile, as basic as it can be achieved today, being more appropriate to serve as someone’s secondary device than anything else.

As you can imagine, the J20 is equipped with the bare minimum in terms of hardware, while at the software level it defends itself with the help of Android 12 in its GO edition. And with that in mind, today we will review what this humble terminal has to offer, which inhabits the range of 80 euros without shame or glory.

On the other hand, those who are looking for something more competent and modern, will be interested in knowing the Cubot P80 instead , which achieves a good balance point between the mid-range and the entry-level.

Design and screen

The Cubot J20 is a device that is not made to stand out in any way, but certainly to be peculiar due to its small dimensions and, more importantly, 4-inch screen , something that in fact the manufacturer considers as a selling point. With that in Mind you, its compact miniature form factor might appeal to some in this day and age where regular phones don’t go below 6.5 inches, but the screen itself is nothing to brag about.

In this sense, the J20 uses a FWVGA+TN technology panel with a resolution of only 854 x 480 pixels , which is below today’s HD standard, although it should not be so noticeable on such a small screen. how are you doing. Its bezels are thick and it does not have a drop of water like most current mobiles, but in this price range this is usually the case.

When it comes to the design of the mobile itself, there is not much to say, it has a completely plastic body and devoid of characteristic elements , even the back cover looks a bit lonely with a single photographic sensor. Be that as it may, we find it available in 3 color presentations: blue, black and green.

Hardware and features

The Cubot J20 is powered by a humble MT6739WA chip with a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU , but obviously it doesn’t come alone, and on this we have to note that the terminal actually has two memory configurations. The first is only 2GB of RAM with 16GB of internal storage , while the second offers 3GB of RAM plus 32GB of storage . In either case, there’s a dedicated Micro-SD card slot up to 128GB in case you need more space for files.

The performance offered by this smartphone is nothing remarkable, but it is certainly sufficient for everyday applications, web browsing and chatting. Cubot’s J20 meets the basics and nothing more, don’t expect to play games with a decent frame rate and also not use demanding applications. In any case, we suggest going for the 3GB+32GB version, since the price difference is not that big and that extra gigabyte can help avoid bottlenecks; likewise, 16GB of storage is very little these days, 32GB should already be the new minimum.

Then there is the issue of the battery, which is honestly one of the weakest points of the offer. It is a 2,350mAh unit, which at most can deliver one day of use . It must also be recognized that the size and low resolution of the screen lend themselves to saving energy, so we can understand why the manufacturer has opted for a low-capacity battery.

Android 12Go

We cannot ignore the presence of Android 12 Go as the operating system , as these Go editions contribute significantly to offering a smooth experience on resource-constrained devices like this one, so we see this as quite a wise decision.

In case anyone is wondering, the Cubot J20 is a 4G mobile that supports Dual-SIM , normally we would not see it as necessary to make this clarification, but several entry-level mobiles sacrifice 4G. Fortunately, the J20 is not one of them.

Cameras

The Cubot J20 is equipped with purely utilitarian cameras, that is, the type of sensors that are only to be used when the need arises, because with its main sensor of only 5MP you cannot get shots that are worth sharing on social networks. . Similarly, its 2MP front camera is not suitable for taking selfies that do justice to our best face. This is definitely the aspect where the most cuts were made to keep the price of the terminal so cheap.
