T+A Symphonia: A Modern Integrated Amplifier with Retro Charm and Cutting-Edge Technology

German audio manufacturer Theorie und Anwendung (T+A) has introduced the Symphonia, an integrated amplifier featuring both analogue and digital connectivity options. It includes a dedicated turntable input and boasts a wide array of streaming capabilities. The front panel is adorned with retro-style VU meters, while the internal components are entirely modern.

The Symphonia, featuring an integrated streaming amplifier, represents T+A’s homage to nearly fifty years of Engineering Emotion. This model not only looks ahead but also honors the legacy of past T+A engineers, designers, and manufacturers whose creativity and craftsmanship have brought to life some of the brand’s most iconic products.

Integrating what it describes as cutting-edge streaming technology, digital-to-analog conversion, and amplification, the Symphonia showcases an industrial design that pays homage to T+A’s most cherished historical products, featuring elements such as beveled front panels and meticulously crafted VU meters. The result is a true representation of the “retro” aesthetic. The manufacturer asserts that the design is deeply inspired by the past while avoiding mere replication, remaining forward-looking without losing sight of its origins. This fusion of tradition and innovation aims to create a timeless sonic companion.

T+A Symphonia: Output stages with technology from Purifi Eigentakt

The Symphonia is equipped with custom-designed power amplifiers that utilize the innovative Purifi Eigentakt technology. Developed by a Danish tech firm, T+A asserts that this platform represents the pinnacle of Class D amplifier design, effectively addressing the challenges that have historically hindered other Class D models through a consistent technological framework. Traditionally, Class D amplifiers faced issues such as high load dependency, distortion, phase noise, and increased distortion at elevated power levels. However, the amplifier technology featured in the Symphonia is distinguished by an exceptionally low distortion factor and minimal intermodulation distortion, irrespective of power levels, as noted by T+A.

The amplifier delivers a rated power of 125 watts per channel at eight ohms and 250 watts at four ohms, with a damping factor exceeding 800. Its output stages cover a frequency range from 1 Hz to 60 kHz, significantly surpassing the limits of human hearing. The preamplifier extends this range even further, operating from 0.5 Hz to 300 kHz.

T+A Symphonia: Radio functions and streaming

The T+A device features both analogue and digital inputs, along with a dedicated turntable input. For radio enthusiasts, it offers FM, DAB, and internet radio options. Users can access all major streaming services through an app, and the Symphonia supports the open standard UPnP. Network connectivity can be achieved using a UTP LAN cable or wirelessly via Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth functionality also included. Music can be played from a NAS or a connected USB storage device, accommodating all contemporary file formats and resolutions.

Additionally, the HDMI ARC connection enables linking to a television, and a headphone jack is conveniently located on the front.
