Best phono stage 2023

For vinyl lovers, 2022 was an expanse – the light saw a number of innovative models, the circuitry of which was previously available only for amounts ten times more expensive.

We have selected for you the seven most striking phono stages of the season – for every taste.

7. Fezz Audio Gaia MC mini

Fezz Audio Gaia MC mini for a relatively small amount offers amazing flexibility – the model can work with both MM and MC heads. The device uses an element base with a quality clearly higher than that accepted in this price group (operational amplifiers based on Burr-Brown OPA 2132 FET transistors and Nichicon Fine Gold capacitors) and demonstrates a signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB. This kilogram baby is exceptionally good in terms of sound – sparkling and detailed.

Pros – decent sound, lots of features

Cons – slightly lacking bass resolution

Verdict : Excellent value for money

6. EAR / Yoshino Phonobox Normal MM

Tim de Paravicini develops the iconic EAR / Yoshino product line – now the traditional tube Phonobox has been divided into a number of models, the youngest of which is called the Normal MM. As the name suggests, the unit can only be used with MM cartridges – however, if you’re willing to put up with it, three ECC 83 tubes and original EAR/Yoshino Phonobox Normal MM circuitry will do wonders for delivering a rich, spacious and true analog sound.

Pros – rich analog sound

Cons – no support for MS cartridges

Verdict : The signature style of the model will definitely charm you

5. Channel D Lino C 3.3

Unlike the model described above, the critically acclaimed Channel D Lino C 3.3 will only work with MC heads. A large, eight-kilogram device uses a current-mode circuit – that is, a phono stage operates in current mode, not voltage. Channel D Lino C 3.3 performs all tuning on the cartridge in automatic mode (when the head resistance is below 100 ohms) and guarantees a three-dimensional and ultra-dynamic sound. The right word, after the inclusion of the device in the path, it seems that the veil has been removed between the system and the listener. The icing on the cake is the battery pack.

Pros – super fast and clear sound

Cons – nothing major

Verdict : Ultra-modern model

4. Sutherland Engineering Little Loco Mk2

Another phono stage that works only with MC cartridges in the current input mode – working on current, not on voltage, becomes the standard for junction of upper Hi-Fi categories with the initial High End. Look “under the hood” – we have not seen such luxury for a long time, Sutherland Engineering Little Loco Mk2 uses a circuit with maximum separation of the power supply from the main correction circuits and separate paths for the left and right channels. On the sound side, the model picks up the stars from the sky, offering a delightful delivery that can breathe new life into your vinyl record collection.

Pros – dynamics, detail – you can list for a long time

Cons – none

Verdict : Another current booster that grabs stars from the sky

3. EMT 128

The history of EMT 128 began back in 1985, when it became necessary to upgrade phono stages for the company’s studio equipment. Now this circuitry is supplemented with precision element base (Lundahl transformers, Mundorf MCap ZN capacitors) and uses Raytheon 5784WB microtubes. The EMT 128 has a gain of up to 70 dB, and the sound is literally captivating, offering signature plasticity along with the dynamics of the beast.

Pros – branded sound wall in all its glory

Cons – high price

Verdict : EMT confirms leadership

2. Clearaudio Absolute Inside

The two-block mastodon Clearaudio Absolute Inside, again, uses a current amplification circuit – so you will not find any relays in the signal circuit. But the device flaunts a full-fledged “dual mono” design, a huge external power supply (which would be suitable for a power amplifier), as well as expensive components (Vishay Dale resistors and Clearaudio Glimmer non-magnetic capacitors). The open and engaging sound of the Clearaudio Absolute Inside demonstrates what true High End is all about.

Pros – Luxurious construction, stunning detail

Cons – you have to pay for quality

Verdict : Clearaudio will not let you down

1. Air Tight ATE-3011

The top-end Air Tight ATE-3011 phono stage can correct the signal with as many as five equalization curves (RIAA, NAB, AES, FFRR and FLAT), and the model also allows you to create custom correction options. Reference circuitry – 12AX7 lamps, mica capacitors, a pair of giant toroidal transformers. The sound of the Air Tight ATE-3011 demonstrates a whole “ton of brilliant” – such gloss and abundance of details do not raise even a shadow of doubt about the justification of the device’s price list.

Pros – brilliance, chic and luxury

Cons – extremely high price

Verdict : Model “from space”
