This fall, Apple is likely to release two new versions of its headphones

Apple is expected to launch new AirPods this fall, which is long overdue. The current 2nd generation model, introduced in 2019, serves as the entry-level true wireless stereo (TWS) option. Meanwhile, the 3rd generation headphones, released in 2021, are also becoming outdated. The upcoming 4th generation AirPods will be available in two distinct versions. One will serve as a new entry-level option, replacing the 2nd generation, while the other will be a mid-range model, taking the place of the AirPods 3. The entry-level earbuds will not feature active noise cancellation (ANC), whereas the mid-range in-ear model will include this capability.

However, the noise cancellation of the upcoming 4th generation Apple AirPods is said to be inferior to the Pro model. The latter will continue to be the top model, and a 3rd generation is no longer planned for this year. The AirPods Pro 2 will be launched in 2022. So Apple will probably introduce a successor model next year.

Apple AirPods 4: Charging via USB-C

Both iterations of the fourth-generation Apple AirPods are reported to support USB-C charging. It is anticipated that the base model will lack wireless charging capabilities, while the mid-tier version is expected to offer wireless charging as an option. It is important to clarify that this information is not officially confirmed but is based on insights from renowned Apple journalist Mark Gurman. The company itself has not made any announcements and appears to be enjoying the speculation. With the next generation of iPhones expected to launch in September 2024, a simultaneous unveiling of the new AirPods could be a strategic move.

Additionally, it raises the question of whether Apple will eventually release a successor to its over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, which have been on the market for several years. Currently, there are no new rumors regarding this product, suggesting that the focus may remain on the new in-ear models for both entry-level and mid-range consumers. Apple has seen significant success in the headphone market within these segments.

Nonetheless, Apple still has room for improvement regarding sound formats. The company primarily utilizes AAC for its AirPods, and it remains to be seen if it will consider adopting higher-quality Bluetooth codecs in the future.
