PlayStation 5 Breaks Sales Records Despite Microprocessor Shortages

Sony sold 10 million PlayStation 5 consoles, while rival Microsoft sold 6.5 million Xbox Series X / S consoles. At the same time, the shortage of these devices on the market still persists due to the global shortage of microprocessors.

Record sales of consoles

Since launching in November 2020, PlayStation 5 consoles have sold 10 million units worldwide. It took Sony 249 days to reach that target, while the PlayStation 4 hit that mark in 271 days. Thus, the PS5 is the fastest selling video game console in the history of the company.

Ever since the Xbox One began to lag behind the PS4 in popularity, Microsoft has stopped publicly announcing sales figures for its consoles. However, this time the Americans were quick to announce the high demand for the Xbox Series X / S.

“Xbox Series X and S are our fastest selling consoles to date, outpacing previous generations of these devices,” said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

Experts estimate that Xbox Series X / S sales totaled 6.5 million units as of June 30, 2021. At the same time, the same figure for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 amounted to 5.7 million and 5 million, respectively, over the same period of time.

New game consoles are posting record sales figures during the global pandemic, driving demand for home entertainment and teleworking devices. This was the reason for the shortage of microprocessors, which will continue to 2022, experts say.
