Apple is set to introduce support for wide and ultra-wide virtual displays on Macs with the upcoming upgrade to visionOS 2.2 for Apple Vision Pro. This feature is already accessible in beta and is currently undergoing testing.

Currently, you can project your Mac’s display onto the Apple Vision Pro headset and incorporate extra visionOS applications into your visual experience. However, the virtual Mac mirroring feature is restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio and 4K resolution at this time.

By upgrading your system software to visionOS 2.2, you will gain access to additional mirroring options for wide and ultrawide displays on your Mac. This update will enable you to select from Normal (16:9), Wide (21:9), or Ultrawide (32:9) modes.

The additional features effectively transform Apple’s Vision Pro headset into several virtual displays for your portable MacBook, potentially providing some rationale for the headset’s $3,500 cost. Apple characterizes the ultrawide setting as “comparable to two 5K screens positioned next to each other.”

The latest feature is now accessible in the visionOS 2.2 beta. It also necessitates a Mac operating on macOS 15.2 beta. While Apple has not detailed specific hardware requirements, user feedback suggests that it is compatible exclusively with Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer), excluding Intel-based models.

Apple is anticipated to launch macOS 15.2 and visionOS 2.2 in early December.
