USB-C now supports up to 240W charging thanks to this baby

Specialists from VIA Labs, which develops USB4, SuperSpeed USB and USB Power Delivery controllers, shared good news – its products have been certified according to the USB-IF standard. We are talking about the proprietary VL108 USB PD 3.1 controller, which now meets the requirements of the Power Delivery 3.1 standard. This will increase the power of laptop chargers from 100W to 240W by transferring power through the USB Type-C connector.

Previously, 100 watts was enough to charge small laptops, however, now that the screen sizes have increased, and the laptops themselves are equipped with more powerful processors and video cards, this power is not enough for the normal operation of devices.

In addition to more powerful laptop chargers, the new controller has another useful feature.

The certified controller has another useful feature. With 48V/5A Extended Power Range (EPR), it will be possible to output images to an external display using USB 4 or DisplayPort in Alternate Mode – streaming video and receiving power at the same time.

According to VIA Labs, the first models of laptops with new controllers will appear on the market this year.
